The best song here, "Chinese Braille," isn't going to top anyone's song of the year list, but when Candy Salad is on, it seems like the only music you'll ever need. And that counts for something.

These high points are the result of the band finding that musical sweet spot where corporate rockism is a well-executed (albeit silly) guilty pleasure rather than a collection of melodramatic gimmicks and air-rock hat-tips.

Suckers have turned in a respectable album of big sounds and strong melodies.

In terms of pure songwriting, Suckers have emerged with surprising (and, at times, frustrating) discipline.

The richly produced, melodically generous Candy Salad is plenty to chew on, but one can't help wishing its songs could be as vibrant as its sounds.

This album will make for a perfectly amicable spring soundtrack, but in terms of a long-term shelf life it's be hard to imagine Candy Salad making it through the sweat and debauchery of the summer festival circuit in one relevant piece.

For the most part, Candy Salad reaches for big impact, and there's not much in the way of surprise or nuance – they want you to feel things, so most of the time they bash away at their instruments and do other things to make you pay attention.
