Carry On stuns from start to finish and the quality only increases with each repeat listen.

The result is both pensive and romantic, a work filled with vividly poetic snapshots. [Jan 2013, p.79]

There's a layer of gloss and artfulness here that makes Carry On more appealing than whiskery ideas of authenticity. [Jan 2013, p.88]

The arrangements can be flabby, but what you'll hear at the heart of Carry On is the voice of one of music's great troubadours.

The addition of producer Dan Carey lends a subtle electronic ambiance to the proceedings, one that adds a warm glow to Mason's melancholy tunes and rekindles the raw poeticism of his debut. [Aug-Sep 2013, p.102]

Carry On might be the most personal Willy Mason record to date and finds him unafraid to use traditional blues motifs--narrow roads, one-way streets, and fugitives--to fully express himself as a songwriter.
  7. 40
This third album sounds exhausted, worn out rather than careworn.

It’s still folky but it also has a ramshackle nature about it, the grooves are laid back and reminded me a bit of Simple Kid, weird sections of guitar, feedback and noise haunt the backgrounds of the songs adding to the country picking and his characteristic voice. Apart from the 2 minute bridging ‘Show Me The Way To Go Home’ every track is great and it’s not that that one is bad it’s just over before it starts. ‘Restless Fugitive’ stands out with its folk/reggae meander and ‘I Got Gold’ brings to mind Graceland era Paul Simon. ‘What Is This’, ‘Pickup Truck’ and title track ‘Carry On’ are all strong and it feels like Willy has become more comfortable with his own unique approach allowing the songs to speak rather than the production. There is also a familiarity to the songs, which is a testament to how well they are written that you feel you know them like old friends and can certainly sing-along after only a few listens. ‘Carry on’ is solid album which should keep fans happy while also bringing new ones to the fold.
