    It's got hooks and noise, songs to dance to and songs for fighting. The lineup change isn't the cause of this, though; instead, it's just further proof that Moor, Bornefeld, and Hessels were just as important and powerful as Sok in the band's mixture.

    Continually developing and evolving, the Ex sound as vibrant as ever, and Catch My Shoe has an enviably timeless feel.

    This album fits into the venerable history of The Ex and will make you want to dig out the old albums, too. History, as the band told us back in 1982, is what's happening now.

    It's tempting to consider The Ex as Holland's The Fall, but that wouldn't be quite right--de Boer's pronouncements lack the gnomic bite of Mark E Smith. But these free thinkers are still taking more risks than Salford's finest have considered in years. [Dec 2010, p.46]

    This quartet's latest work still bellows in and out with the urgency of a boxer's lungs, and new singer Arnold de Boer maintains a strident edge while adding a barely perceptible undercurrent of lightness. Missing is the low end. [Feb 2011, p.87]

    Catch My Shoe certainly isn't the work of a band that has lost a step, even with the exit of a crucial member, though de Boer's presence does subtly but perceptibly tweak the Ex's tried-and-true formula.

    Catch My Shoe shares some 21st century dissent with new albums from Wire and Gang of Four, but the Ex's continual flow of ideas and collaborations has kept its members in forward motion, where their UK counterparts are coming back to the fire after smelling the smoke.

    DeBoer's political poesy lacks his predecessor's acerbic wit, and his singsong delivery is much less bracing than Sok's full-throated rant.

    The Ex has always absorbed the flavor of whatever it's paired with-and de Boer is mostly flavorless. His hiccupping, singsong vocals try to operate on the same level as Sok's raspy, poetic chants, but the result is tentative and forceless.

    Music that matters. Brilliant and powerful. I don't think I need to say more than that, but for the 150 words minimum limit I'll keep rambling.......
