Caustic Love may be the best UK R&B album since the 1970s blue-eyed-soul heyday of Rod Stewart and Joe Cocker.

The 27-year-old and his whisky-soaked words writhe their way around a multitude of Motown-inflected could-be singles, paying homage to Prince, Marvin Gaye, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Beach Boys and D'Angelo along the way.

Caustic Love is the sound of Nutini finally finding his groove and producing a record that lives up to his talent.

While Caustic Love is clearly the work of a maturing singer-songwriter (shedding jaunty charm for depth and ambition), it finds the 27-year-old still skittering around in search of an artistic identity.

Caustic Love is a truly excellent modern soul record. [May 2014, p.114]

Nutini reins in the melodrama, and Caustic Love is testament to that restraint.

He's let down by the lyrics, which seem, to have been assembled from a collection of fridge magnet soul cliches. [May 2014, p.78]

Nutini has really found his groove and is holding nothing back anymore. He keeps it fresh with a guest vocal rap on 'Fashion' that slots in effortlessly (is that Janelle Monae?), kicks it way back on 'Better Man' and gets heavy and philosophical on 'Iron Sky' without it ever seeming contrived. SUCH a great album! Expand

Caustic Love is poignant, funky, funny (Bus Talk!), smart, full of old-soul of New Orleans, inflammable album that is impossible not to love. It is not heavily over-produced, while still remaining to be rich in sound and despite, at moments, so beautifully acoustic that you can touch every emotion in Paolo's husky voice. You want to be that girl that funked his life up in Scream (Funk My Life Up) and because of which he wants to be a Better Man.
This album can easily be written by Amy Winehouse and Joe Cocker in one dark, smoky room after too much booze and cigarettes. Pear Jam could've been in that party, too. Maybe in that diorama appeared Cherry Blossom, and in Someone Like You you might expect Ben E. King and The Drifters to show up and slip in with Save the Last Dance for Me. However, master-piece of this album is six minute and 13 seconds long Iron Sky with speech from Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. A song so staggering that quickly becomes part of you, a song that sets very high standard for every song Nutini will write in the future, and puts the whole album on another level.

Whilst his two previous albums I enjoyed immensely, These Streets and Sunny Side Up did not have as much heart than this new release. That does not mean to say that there was no heart at all but rather Nutini has clearly created a piece of work that he knows is brilliant. He talks about being a perfectionist and we can clearly see this in his tightly controlled composition of the music in this album and maybe this is what makes Caustic Love a gem, the devotion to creating a truly perfect work of art. With the exception of track 9 Diana every track is excellent in its own right and also build to create another marvelous piece of music.

Overall I would put this into the Must Have section of anyones music collection.

So many albums get 8,9,10 stars but don't seem to measure up, maybe it's just my aging (y)ears. Very much in a similar bag of chips to Terence Trent D'Arby's first album, it's got a lot of soul history going on inside the tin. It's cohesive, without being samey, probably more likely to be for your mum or dad, if your under 25, but I couldn't be sure :) Expand
