With the beautiful voice of Florence Welch, and the instrumentals that enhance the experience even more, Ceremonials is no sophomore slump. Towards the end, some tracks become a bit diluted by over-production, but don't let that throw you off because the meaning, emotion, and spirituality in them still never disappoint. The only song that is truly disappointing on this album is Seven Devils, which seems a bit overdone and meaningless. Still, it features great tracks, some even written entirely by Florence herself (Breaking Down and Lover to Lover), that all demonstrate the talent and originality that this band has, even with a tad of over-production. It's powerful, a power that exceeds even the near flawless 'Lungs'. It carries with it the haunting edge 'Lungs' also held, but plays on it in far more straight-forward ways, a hurricane in musical production and voice, though she equally explores softer melodies, wind instruments and sweeter singing, reminiscent to my 'Lungs' highlight, 'Blinding'.

This is not to mention the fact that Florence Welch is one of the best songwriters in recent memory, let alone singers. She's truly crafted herself a niche in music and still manages to feel like a breath of empowering, fresh air on every listen. It's thus far, for me, the quintessential album of 2011.

This album changes nothing of my opinions about the band other than that now, the band is just as important as Welch's vocals. It offers an eclectic set of sounds with great musicality. "Only If for a Night" opens the album promisingly to join "Never Let Me Go", "Spectrum", and "Seven Devils" being the tracks that stand out the most.

I see lots of "smart" reviews, as if we, the users, are real critics in the music industry. It's true, the album is great, compared to these days music, which is absolutely rubbish. The album is great, it really is. But, there is something missing that was constantly in Florence + The Machine's 'Lungs.' The album is more soulful. And it contains as much gloom as its predecessor. The first track, Only If For A Night, is the best track in the album. The lyrics are nothing we hadn't already seen on 'Lungs.' Shake It Out is an anthemic masterpiece. And Breaking Down has Florence's most pop-sounding production ever. The worst tracks on the album are the spooky Tim Burton film-esque Seven Devils, the boring and charmless Leave My Body and the tribal Heartlines. But, most of the album is great. The album incorporates new genres not explored in 'Lungs.' The disco-ish Spectrum is a prime example. Another one is Lover to Lover which sounds very jazz adult contemporary and not exactly indie pop or art rock, like most of Flo's work. But overall, the album is not quite the masterpiece of 'Lungs', but it is pretty darn close. It may be the most soulful approach we may ever hear from Florence + The Machine. Expand

This is one of the best albums of the year. I do not deny that Florence's big, glamorous chorus lines get a little repetitive, but I don't even care. "Ceremonials" is a sonic joyride and an emotional release. It's big, it's loud, and it's awesome.

Lacks the raw emotion in "Lungs" that I connected to, but makes up for it with experimental sounds not found in the "normal" popular music and is still able to find a balance between her voice and the instrumental. Word of advice: It's an epic album, and should be treated as one. Takes many listenings to fully digest it, but once you hear, it never leaves your head and that's the power of Florence and the Machine. The reason why the album isn't as good as her first album "Lungs" is because the producer Paul Epworth, creates a sound equal to that of her voice and the wail of her voice is lost in the exotic sounds that make the album worth a listen. There is an edginess that was present in songs like "Kiss with a Fist" and "Girl with One Eye" and "I'm not Calling You A Liar" that is missing in the new album and is replaced with pulsing beats and Olympic chorus chants that seem to elevate Florence in a totally different.
I think a metaphor is best to describe "Lungs" and "Ceremonials". In "Lungs" Florence makes you want to rip off all of your clothes and dance in the woods. In "Ceremonials" Florence bombards you with godly chants that make you want to release your voice along with her just so you can survive her epic album that fills your heart with admiration and trepidation.
Florence has proven with her sophomore album "Ceremonials" that there are many paths she may choose to take but which ever one, she is calling the shots and she will burst into any genre with power and might without sacrificing her artistic judgement. If you haven't listened to Flo, take a look at a couple of her well known songs (Dog Days Are Over and I'm Not Calling you a Liar) before you jump into her music. If you allow her to slowly take over you with one or two songs, you will find yourself in countless showers, wailing along with her in her two gorgeous albums. She is an artist whose burgeoning career has only begun with these two albums and she will continue to become an inspirational artist to many. Expect her to join the British movement along with her British brethren: Adele, Duffy, Lilly Allen in changing American music for the better--a movement started by the Godmother of British blue soul--Amy Winehouse.

8/10 - "Instead of Lungs' largely charming yet discombobulating diversity, Ceremonials suffers from a repetitiveness that's akin to looking at a skyline filled with 100-story behemoths lined-up one after the other, blocking out everything but their own size" - Pitchfork

Yeah, Ceremonials is more 'cohesive' than Lungs, but it also lacks the electrifying spark that came with it. Does that ruin the entire album? No, but it's definitely not her best.

It took me a while to completely get into Florence's music, but thanks to ''Spectrum'' I got interest into listening to this album. And I was not dissapointed at all. Along with Spectrum, my favourites were Shake It Out, Only if for a Night and No Light, No Light. Also, I forgot to say that Florence has a magical voice.

Florence has gone much heavier on Cermonials. Her lyrics are darker, her tunes are moodier, and her beats are more powerful and deep - any previous fans of Lungs will not be disappointed.

Florence the Machine have done it again! Ceremonials is a great album, songs like "Shake It Out "Spectrum," and "Lover to Lover" are great examples. Although this album isn't as fun as Lungs, it still is wonderful, exactly what you would expect from Florence.

A masterpiece of Florence the Machine. An excellent elaboration of every minute of all the songs and an amazing voice of Florence Welch that simply transports us to unknown worlds of which we won't want to return.

A beautiful, sprawling, atmospheric album that takes me to dark places where I want to wail the lyrics with careless abandon. Okay, maybe that's dramatic, but Florence + the Machine IS drama. And this album is the perfect embodiment of their affinity for gut busting numbers. I love this album, and there are very few tracks on it that I will skip.

It's dark and far heavier than the first album. And for the most part.. its bloody brilliant. The low point for me remains for me however Seven Devils, which plods and feels a little overworked with those keyboards. Other than that, its fairly nice she likes writing songs about drowning.

But firstly, the album's main strength. If you enjoy an orchestral backing and soaring vocals, then you'll love this. The music is never less than epic, sweeping and screaming in its sound. There are some magnificent highs - as good as anything that Florence included in Lungs. ''Spectrum'' is a real gem - atmospheric strings give way to a galloping beat and Flo's emotional ''Say my name!'' in the chorus.
''Seven Devils'' is also an intriguing but extremely loud and well crafted song, and the closing chorus will blow your mind. Another noteable ''loudie'' is ''No light, no light'' - a thumping and unrelenting tribal bash of a song, with soaring vocals.
However, the album's main strength has also been turned into one of it's biggest weaknesses. The vocals and orchestra are uncomfortably overdone at times, and done help one or two of the tracks. ''Shake it out'' is a noteable but over sung track, which becomes a little bland after a few listens. ''Heartlines'' is also far too grand (and bland) for its own good, and ''Never let me go'' somehow manages to be beautifully over sung and produced for its own good.
Generally though, the good moments are well worth all the over production. A truly spectacular and gigantic sounding record with a bit of an ego.

Florence + The Machine evolui com o lançamento do Ceremonials. Agora, com um conceito mais melancólico, os ouvintes embarcam num álbum com uma extrema qualidade, em que nos prende do começo ao fim. "Shake It Out", "No Light, No Light" e "Seven Devils" são o apogeu do álbum.

Ceremonials is gorgeous head-to-toe, making grand statements with heavy syntax, but paradoxically, it's light as air.
  2. 60
It's this robust fervor and subject matter that fire up and lift up many of the songs on Ceremonials, but the constant exhortation comes at a price. Listener fatigue sets in as the relentless, up-tempo pace and sharply exclamatory vocal tone overwhelms over the course of the album.

For all the florid curlicues and crescendos, Welch's second album is light on true beauty, real idiosyncrasy. [Dec. 2011, p.94]
