The EP comes and goes in 16 minutes, but it's nice to see Braid picking up as if 10 years hadn't passed. Here's hoping more music follows.
  2. It's nice to have a few good new tracks to add to the collection from one of the scene's finest.

Damon Atkinson's drumming is phenomenal as always, and Broach's new, crooning vocal style is an exciting first for the band. If this s what aging gracefully sounds like we back it. [Sep 2011, p.110]

It's clear that Braid, after having been a band for more than a decade, have never sounded more like one.

If this is the caliber of what Braid's writing nowadays, though, I'll hold out hope for a full effort.

While the sound is by no means stale, it doesn't have the same edge that the band became known for during their heyday, at times feeling more like an extension of Hey Mercedes than a proper Braid release.

Closer to Closed is a curiously short return, and there's no plans for a full-length to follow, but at least the band pushes itself in these 16 minutes, rather than retreading the high-water mark they left on.

Closer to Closed is a testament to the decline of Braid's teen angst, but those who grew up with the band may not recognize this aging friend.

This year, we've seen Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day, and the Get Up Kids attempting to play catch up with themselves, but here Braid bafflingly jettison the goodwill of their past: the palm-muted verses and squeaky choruses, the one-sided conversations of the lyrics, the antiseptic production -- I'll say it could come from anyone because you probably don't remember who the Pinehurst Kids are.
