I'm a hardcore Cake fan but had to listen to this album five or six times to really start to appreciate it. Now that I have, it's primo stuff.

Granted, this isn't may favorite album (let's look at Prolonging the Magic, which seems to constantly be overlooked), but it's Cake, and it's Cake doing what they do best. They aren't fake, and they don't pretend to be a band that they're not. Many see this album as a turn for the worst for the band. I see is as a way to reliven the ways that have made many a dedicated among the listeners, without betraying the saound they once had. A healthy move! In this day in age, few bands can sound the exact same and get away with it. Give Cake props for retaining their sound for three albums, and help embrace what McCrea and gang are planning. They aren't evolving, nor are the 're-inventing' themselves. They are just changing, and it's not for the worst. Any Cake fan will agree that McCrea's vocal stylings are unmatched, and his friends behind him are truly talented. How about showing a little faith and taking Cake on an album by album basis. I, for one, can't wait to know that I've collected all fifteen Cake albums before I die. And I know a couple thousand people at a sold-out theater that say the exact same thing! Expand

Cake has the most unique sound going. Pair that with clever, biting lyrics and you've got the CD you want in your car stereo every day. The only thing I miss from the earlier records is the clever juxtaposition of musical style and subject matter that characterized such early gems as "Pentagram."

holy crap. This is one of the best albums i've ever heard. I gotta say, for a rock band, that isn't influenced or even listen to rock, they oviously rock.

I think this album is dignified and pretty, especially pretty pink ribbon. The baritone part was awesome!

NOT classic Cake. Gone are the beatuiful accoustics. Instead we have harsh electronics. Not horrible, but not what a Cake fan has come to expect. Buy another copy of Motorcade of Generosity instead.

This is the best Cake record yet. Once again, Vince Di Fiore's excellent trumpet sound sets Cake apart as the best alternative rock band going.

This, their 4th CD, proves that Cake is here to stay. Songs like Shadow Stabbing and Commissioning... showcase their ability to graft sophisticated lyrics and memorable melodies. Meanwhile, songs like Comfort Eagle and Short Skirt Long Jacket continue the vein they have mined so successfully in previous hits The Distance and Never There: smart, off-kilter, up-to-the-minute takes on popular culture and its discontents, complete with great hooks and a beat you can dance to. Who could ask for more? Expand

Fun for the Whole Family Cake keeps getting better and better. It's catchy pop music, but the lyrics are smarter and funnier than just about anything in pop music. At first, there were maybe two or three songs on this CD that I really liked, but the whole thing has really grown on me, and it's hard to go without it. I have to fight over this disk with my wife, 12-year-old son, and 6-year-old daughter. Expand

This is CAKE's worst album, by far. I am a big fan, and I really like all their albums except this one. The songs on Comfort Eagle just lack the kind of hooks we normally hear from CAKE, and I get bored listening to it (which I can't say about any of their other work). Also, this version of Short Skirt Long Jacket isn't as good as the one on B-sides and Rarities. Save yourself the trouble, get B-Sides instead of this. Trust me. Expand

  1. Comfort Eagle is infinitely smarter, smarmier and catchier than Weezer's Green Album. [Oct 2001, p.79]
  2. The best songs, particularly "Long Line of Cars" and "Pretty Pink Ribbon," exhibit a modern pop that is both mechanized and organic.
  3. It's mostly funny, but it also gets kind of same-y as these average Joes embrace their marching-band backgrounds and revel in self-deprecating humor.
