  1. It goes without saying that the Pixies' b-sides don't make for an average, run-of-the-mill outtakes compilation, as many of the songs are almost or equally as radiant as the more fortunate tracks that made it to the five classics between 1987 and 1991.
  2. The fact that "Complete B-Sides" rocks from start to finish speaks volumes about the Pixies' bizarre creative genius, and their focus on output rather than sales.
  3. Many of their B-sides are just as good as their album tracks, so it's terrific to see them collected onto a single disc. But a number of factors make it somewhat disappointing, not the least of which is that Complete B-Sides is available only as a U.K. import, due to U.S. licensing problems.
  4. Fortunately, the depth of great songs written by Francis results in something that feels more like a proper album of still-dynamic psycho-rock than a shoddy cash-in.
  5. Even though this compilation doesn’t rival any of the Pixies’ classic studio albums, it is still essential listening.

B-Side collections, let's face it, usually suck knob. But the Pixies are no ordinary band, and thus they transform this into no ordinary leftovers collection. The majority of the songs are excellet, but what's really impressive about Complete B-Sides is that it actually almost coheres as a real album - the finest compliment you could ever pay a compilation. A couple of weak mis-steps (including the two bonus music videos, which are both - be honest, people - awful) spoil the total package, but that's to be expected. Still worth every penny. Vol. 2 soon?? Full Review »
