This album was Kendrick changing his sound and offering something different than his previous albums. A great listen from start to end, still need to listen a couple more times to unpack the lyrics

A very good Hip-Hop album and Kendrick’s best album, lyrically. The album is different from his previous two albums.

The album isn’t as strong as TPABF but, the track on the album does sound better. Kendrick isn’t spitting that super political message like he did on TPABF but, his lyrics and bars are more fun to listen to on this album. This album will probably be 2017 the best

This album will probably be 2017 the best hip-hop albums and top 10 albums of the year and receive many Grammys nominations.

The lead single, HUMBLE is an overall great track but, it isn’t the best from this album. There are far better songs than Humble.

The single isn’t the best on the album, but it is one of the best singles of the year. This track could also end up getting an Oscar nomination, depending on what other songs he decides to put out as a single.

Kendrick Lamar is taking a Kanye West approach with his albums. Every album sounds different from the last. The thing that Kendrick does well with his new sound is keeping it hip-hop. This album doesn’t have that jazz feeling or west coast hip-hop feeling, it actually sounds like more of the newer radio hip hop stuff, but, it still sounds like real hip hop.

Overall, this album shows that Kendrick can change sounds and still sound great.

9.3/10 - Great tracks and lyrically his best, but it lacks the overall strong message and storytelling like TPABF and GKMC.

    TPABF: 9.7/10
    GKMC:9.0

Ive always wondered what kendrick would do after his classic tpab. Will he really go experimental, will he go trap, his style on gkmc or he would continuehis jazz sound? And we got this. DAMN. is a great album. From bangers such as DNA. and HUMBLE. to more introspective and meaningful songs such as PRIDE. and YAH. the album is superbly executed. Even the commercial songs like LOYALTY. and LOVE. are good although they would probably the weaker songs in the album in my opinion.

Most of the time when I listen to music, I just play it in the background while I play video games. However, there are a few artists that I listen to where I need to drop everything just to listen to their songs and pay attention to every lyric, especially when it's new. However, there are a few artists that I listen to where I need to drop everything just to listen to their songs and pay attention to every lyric, especially when it's new. One of these artists is Kendrick Lamar, who I was admittedly late to the hype train for. 2015's To Pimp A Butterfly was one of the best albums I had ever heard in my life, so I knew that nothing he ever did again would match it, let alone top it, but I wanted him to at least come close. In this regard, DAMN. has met my expectations, but this isn't a bad thing.

Seeing how every other album up until this point has sounded different from the last, it's no surprise that DAMN. follows this trend. TPAB was heavily influenced by jazz, making it sound more like a blast from the past than a modern expedition, but DAMN. has filled that gap for someone looking for the ladder. Kendrick has somehow made a more mainstream album that still sounds unique. There's just track after track of musical genius. HUMBLE., DNA., ELEMENT., and LOYALTY. all now rank among my favorites of the artist. Almost every song on here sounds amazing, and even the one's I don't like I can still appreciate the quality of.

My one gripe with DAMN. is that it lacks the strong overall message that was present in TPAB or the stageshow-like storytelling of Good Kid, m.A.A.d City, but this is a small complaint because the music is still consistently amazing and entertaining to listen to.

Easily some of Kendrick's best work. 9/10.

Kendrick Lamar strikes again with a new style to his rap career. What makes K.dot unique is the fact that each of his albums has a distinct and innovative style. Kendrick stands out in this album as a rapper who has now become 'mainstream' yet remained true to his music and background.

Note: This album requires at least 3 listens to break down the lyrics and understand the message of the album.

Conceptually, Kendrick's deepest most personal piece of work, with connections between every individual song being incredibly paramount to a structurally fractured tale about faith, which is supported by Kendrick's razor-sharp, masterful rapping as well as his incredible gift at using wordplay and great lyricism to deliver authentic, vivid stories. Furthermore, Kendrick's musical direction shifts once again as he reinvents himself in yet another masterpiece of the genre. Kendrick substitutes smooth, rhythmic jazz for raw, intense beats used in tandem with distorted, warped instrumentals, to supplement the juxtaposition-based, duality centered story line he's created to highlight his personal strife and its relation to faith. - Kendrick Lamar, “DNA.”

Since Kendrick Lamar Duckworth’s beginnings as a local Compton rapper known as K-Dot, he has pushed the boundaries of the rap genre.

After releasing his first mixtape, Y.H.N.I.C. (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year) (2003) at age 16, Lamar gained attention locally and signed to LA-based label Top Dawg Entertainment. This prompted the release of the mixtapes Training Day (2005) and No Sleep til’ NYC (2007).

After releasing his fourth mixtape, C4 (2009), Lamar set aside the peer-dubbed pseudonym “K-Dot” and pulled inspiration from his birth name, a refinement reflected in his release at the end of 2009, The Kendrick Lamar EP.

**** my name is Kendrick … Lamar/I said my name is Kendrick … Lamar/I changed the name ‘cause I was tired of being like y’all/Now finally I’m ready to tell the world who I are …”
    - Kendrick Lamar, “Kendrick Lamar”

As a redefined artist, Lamar released his O(verly) D(edicated) mixtape in 2010, followed by his debut studio album Section.80 in 2011, earning him more and more attention. Next released were the albums, good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) and untitled unmastered. (2016), earning him impressive ratings and praise.

On April 14, 2017, Kendrick Lamar released his fourth studio album to the world: DAMN. The album’s lead single, “HUMBLE.,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. All 14 tracks of DAMN. charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album itself peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Metacritic, which gives a rating (metascore) out of 100 to albums based on user and critic reviews, assigned DAMN. a 95—giving Lamar the two highest scoring hip-hop/rap albums on Metacritic to date (To Pimp a Butterfly with 96). DAMN. was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in its third week.

Lamar is in the top five emcees—past and most certainly present—as far as rapping ability, no doubt, but where Lamar stands unrivaled is in his profound artistry. The conceptual beauty of To Pimp a Butterfly was proof, and DAMN. further cemented my belief.

The album is a new chapter in his career, showing the evolution of Lamar’s character.

“Kung Fu Kenny now/My resume is real enough for two millenniums . . . ”
    - Kendrick Lamar, “LOYALTY.”

The protagonist of “good kid, m.A.A.d city” is a young, impressionable Lamar being subjected to the trials and tribulations of growing up in his hometown of Compton, California.

“To Pimp a Butterfly” delves into the challenges of escaping Compton’s perils, the wider struggles of the American black man, and Lamar’s personal struggle in American black society.

DAMN. is the most focused on Lamar’s inner-self—his core emotions. His fears, his feelings, his values—and his “DNA.”—are unveiled on this record, as seen in the track titles “FEAR.,” “FEEL.” and “LOYALTY.”

This is Lamar’s most raw and personal work, conveyed in a humble, but prideful, subdued, but rebellious, manner. After the declarative, hard-hitting “DNA.” comes a dimmed, pensive “YAH.,” followed by the self-empowering “ELEMENT.,” and then the contrastingly somber and vulnerable “FEEL.” The juxtapositions are deliberate and effective.

"I feel like a chip on my shoulders/I feel like I'm losin' my focus/I feel like I'm losin' my patience/I feel like my thoughts in the basement …"
    - Kendrick Lamar, "FEEL."

“‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ would be the idea of the thought of changing the world,” Lamar, in an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, said. “DAMN. would be the idea, ‘I can’t change the world ‘til I change myself.’”

In DAMN. we hear Lamar’s explicit take on what he sees in the mirror. At the root of this project is his struggle for humility, rendered masterfully in high-level lyricism. DAMN. gives the listener an expanded, human sense of Lamar, something not extensively explored in his previous works. Kendrick this season blesses the world with another creative masterpiece.

Drake? Big Sean? In the words of the man himself, “get out the goddamn way.”

He did it again. Kendrick already changed the face of hip hop with his conceptual albums with their distinctive sound, going all over the place with black music and giving it new life. About his lyrics, what I appreciate the most is that he can make conscious rap without being preachy, he criticizes the aspects of relations of his world but also criticizes himself, hell, sometimes even criticizes the fact that he is criticizing other people or other atitudes. Still, he never is a full downer, he knows when to tackle heavier themes but also knows that he has to keep a high self esteem, recognizes everyone has to brag once in a while. And with DAMN. it looks like he mastered that skill, it takes that ''criticism of the world" thing head on, questioning nowadays hip hop and the many feelings a personality in that field goes through. It's a study of kendrick's character, not exactly a personal evolution through an experience like he was in his "short film" good kid maad city for example. There is a lot more anger here, in his lyrics and delivery, which results in a more honest and hard hitting sound, which is something I love he is going back to, (the blacker the berry is probably my favourite song by him) having some pretty insane flows, also changing between them many times in his songs, alongside with the beats (the production on this thing, oh god), and all that never seems jarring, it all fits seamlessly, having quite the consistent tone and song quality. The tracks here work conceptually quite well, but also with a lot of replay value individually, I can't even name which ones are they because it's pretty much all of it. And like I mentioned before, the production on this thing is masterful, with a lot of variety on beats and instrumentals, there's something for everyone here. Hell there's U2 in one of the features and it actually works beautifully. Is it better than the previous albums though? Well, I'll need to give it more listens, but this surely goes toe to toe with good kid as for right now, and it had more replayability than TPAB for me, which I think is a fantastic album with surely the best concept he made so far, but I don't believe it has as many tracks that are great to listen to individually than DAMN., but all of these albums are pretty much on the same level to me, and I can't really say anything bad about any of them, it's really a fantastic career which might be the best one in hip hop of all time. (in this case TPAB), but after my first listen my expectations went away and I fell in love with DAMN. on the second. In fact, this album seems to be an expert at slapping your expectations in the face. Almost every intro is completely different than the actual song, a track may strike you as a basic trap banger, but after a few listens you realize how unconventional it is. It's a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. One that I was hesitant to get on but now enjoy riding multiple times throughout the day. Kendrick experiments with effects, transitions, and styles in a way he never has before and it seems that the messages in this album require a little more digging than usual. The album is one of Kendrick more disjointed, but Kid Kapri, the multiple uses of reverse audio, the one worded themes, and the harmonies singing that you hear at the very beginning of the album link the tracks together.
The low points of the album to me are LOYALTY. and GOD. The themes are pretty simple and Kendrick doesn't seem to say anything interesting about them. And LOYALTY. sounds terrible. From the thin mix to the obnoxious vocal sample to the generic autotune guy to Kendrick's annoying sleepy vocal delivery... I'm not sure about that one.
I give this a 9. But I'm putting a 10 to counteract the Drake fans that give this a low score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this is a huge departure from TPAB. People will be polarised but the themes, sound and other aspects of the album but still...there's isn't 1 skipable track on here. This isn't ultra conceptual like his previous 2 efforts, which has allowed him to focus on the quality more. It will be a classic, but imo the excitement and what Kendrick is trying to portray, plus the trapy beats makes this album authentic. Kendrick said it would be touching on subject of religion, but will be his most authentic project yet. He didn't fail to deliver. I think if he does provide us with another album on Sunday, (whether it's called GOD or NATION) that would probably satisfy those who feel this isn't as powerful as TPAB or UU. I kinda like he's switched up, he isn't in a box sonically, which can't be said for most hip hop artists sadly. He's made another masterpiece, which OVERTIME may develop into his 3rd classic. Only Ice Cube, Jay Z, Kanye and OutKast have that on a commercial level as well, whilst Ice Cube and Jay Z haven't had as high as critical acclaim. This is obviously opinion, but I reckon if a Sunday release is for real he's cemented as the greatest ever hip hop ARTIST. Simply put tho, Kendrick has done incredible. People are genuinely believing he's beaten TPAB...no one thought that would beat GKMC. From the 1st track of this album, BLOOD, I knew Kendrick was going to push boundaries here. He's an unorthodox rapper with an equally widespread, but unique perspective on the topics he chooses to discuss. This is proven in DNA, which could be 1 of the best tracks I've ever heard from 'Kung-Fu Kenny'. Like this album generally is it's a straightforward banger beat mixed in with inspired commentary. I understand, but I don't quite know why people what another TPAB from Kendrick, maybe from another artist, but he's done it now. People need to accept he's moving on to new ideas rapidly. The direct concept(s) maybe will out people off this project, but I'd say he's gone even deeper this time around. On YAH he begins the religious ideas, stating what is needed for change. On ELEMENT he recognises his stardom, but wants to stay focused as a 'black artist' and stay away from the 'wack artists'. FEEL reminds me of u off his last full effort, he's depressed by the lack of continuity of progress and people asking for more of him, when he's the only 1 trying in his eyes. He refers to the next generation as his daughter. Which makes sense in this record, because you wouldn't give your child endless lectures about political matters, you want to get to know them as people. He also feels like this could be feeling of what Tupac Shakur was, who we all know is a massive influence as K-Dot's works. LOYALTY features Rihanna, it's a banger and could be a second phenomenon for Kendrick (after HUMBLE). Like Backseat Freestyle a few back now, HUMBLE fits in perfectly after PRIDE. On PRIDE he talks about no wanting to be humble just cause 'your ass is insecure'. At this point (HUMBLE) he names himself the 'realist after all', probably cause he keeps improving himself for the better. Then LUST!! 'I need some water, something came over me!' It's my joint fave of the album, which also gives hints of what could come to us on Sunday. LOVE is perhaps the most straight forward of the album, yet it's soooooo effective!!!!! I've never really taken notice of Zacari before, but this track is one of the most upbeat from DAMN for sure. XXX is featuring U2 and is one that I think TPAB lovers will rejoice with, it oozes class, whilst suggesting he's a hypocrite for saying he'd return death is someone killed another person like in The Blacker The Berry. He also takes aim at America and their contradictions which can explain LUST and LOVE, which has a kinda prelude to in PRIDE, saying LOVE will get you killed, but PRIDE will be the death of all us. U2 don't spoil it either, they were beyond excellentm as were all features on this masterpiece (not yet classic, give it while tho). FEAR is another one for the long term K-Dot fans, as he discusses his life time worth of fears, at 7, 17 and 27. At a young age he was surrounded by demystify violence, then in his adolescence he's struggled with the gang banging and nightmare environment he was in, for further info listen to GKMC. In Verse 3 he talks about the trails and tribulations of his fame in TPAB. Now I'm Verse 4 he clicked this album in together with precision. All I'll say, is that I think this could be the 'wickedness' album which we choose to 'die (first track' in, then we might receive the 'weakness', perhaps more uplifting one where Kendrick 'lives' on without too much fear/loss of creativity. GOD feels like a confession, where he tells his closest people that he only works hard for God. Then DUCKSWORTH concludes the album with a story, where he gets shot in the end and brings the concept in full circle. Without a doubt, 10/10. Although I'm hopeful for Sunday, I'm fine with this tbh, thank u. Expand

A complete 180 from his previous outings of Untitled Unmastered and TBAP, DAMN harkens more to the GKMC Kendrick with its production and lyrically delivery. Considering the crushing hype surrounding its release, I sit here 3-4 whole listens in, pleasantly satisfied at the offering.

Production distanced itself from the Jazz infused sound of TBAP and met at a middle point between trap beats with some pop flavourings. With regards to lyrics, Kendrick never disappointed and this project wasn't a place to start. Subject matter, cadence and flow were outstanding throughout, which is something we have grown to expect from the Compton native.

Although this album was far and beyond satisfactory in quenching the overwhelming hype-thirst developed by the rap world, I can't help but feel like this change in the direction both sonically and lyrically is missing something. Either I'm still feeling the effects of overinflated expectations from the hype leading to its release or I have to sit with it a little longer than the 24 hours it's been out.
I think it might be the latter.
    It's definitely the latter.
But until that epiphany happens, I'll settle for a 9/10.

It's a different type of rapping listening experience. Very adventurous and creative, just like you would expect K.Dot to be. Always bringing something different to the table.
Some rappers don't deserve to be compared with others. Right now Kendrick Lamar is on his own level

But to give a more specific rating 8.5/10

    Favorite tracks: Humble, DNA, Fear

Kendrick proves himself again. This man goes from climax to climax. I seriously can't believe he did it again. Such an impressive run of albums. Don't sleep on this album, it's easily his second best or even best album.

From the chilling intro track, right the way through to the stunning 'Duckworth' closer, this album is consistent throughout in quality. Tracks like 'XXX' and 'DNA' are heavy hitting, passion filled songs that will answer critics of 'To Pimp a Butterfly's jazzy, laid back approach, whilst there are also smooth cuts like 'Element' and 'Love'. 'Fear' is perhaps the most thought provoking track, detailing the different forms that fear takes throughout Kendrick's life and tying in nicely with the theme of 'Wickedness or Weakness?' that Kendrick discusses on the album. My only criticism is that 'Loyalty' is a little too heavily auto tuned and stands out as the weakest song on the project. Expand

I have no idea how Kendrick Lamar manages to make each song so different in style and yet weave them together so well. Lamar is the genius that Yeezus touts himself as, make no mistake.

Clean, beautiful follow up to Good Kid Maad City. We thought he could only sink from his last, but the different approach he took worked to perfection.

It was difficult to not immediately compare this to the universally acclaimed jazz rap of To Pimp a Butterfly and the West Coast hip hop of Good Kid M.A.A.D. City. However, the extensive production and the profound message in his lyrics prove to be more than enough to hold it's own against his two previous masterpieces and certify itself as a classic.

More replay value than any other Kendrick project, best album of the year so far. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This album made me make an account to write a first-impressions review. Right now, at least for me, this album is a 10. I've listened to it a few times and given a little bit of time in between for it to really gel in my mind. I do not give out 10's lightly. While I am a fan of Kendrick, I entered this album cautiously optimistic, wondering how he could possibly top TPAB. I'm going to be honest, I was not completely blown away by the first few tracks on my first listen, but hearing the second half really helped but the first half in perspective. Now on to the actual meat of the review.

This album ditches a lot of the jazz influences of TPAB, but it focuses in a lot more on modern hip hop while still finding innovative and subversive ways to incorporate these sounds. Kendrick's flow on these tracks are insane. He's constantly switching up his meter and rhyme scheme. The production is also amazing. The backing instrumentals are some of the best of modern hip hop. They're nice to vibe to and aren't derivative.

Humble was a nice way to tease the album. It's not my favorite track, but it fits perfectly in context with the album. Putting it in the album where it is adds a lot more meaning to what he's saying outside of dissing other rappers.

    NOW ONTO THE SPOILERS!

The themes on this album took a couple listens to really drill into my head. The opening track, "BLOOD.", tells a story of a man attempting to help a blind woman, who ends up shooting him. The rest of the album deals mostly with Kendrick's fame and how he tries to handle the stress of being the "best". He has a fear of judgment, which fits in really nicely with the religious themes in the album. He speaks a lot about praying for others, but is skeptical of others praying for him. Since he is seen as one of the modern greats of hip hop, he portrays himself as a Christ-like figure, which is especially apparent in the music video for HUMBLE., in which he is sitting in the center of a Last Supper scenario. Also, at the end of the album, the first lines of BLOOD. are repeated, which could hint to a death and resurrection (or a possible second album coming out on Easter Sunday, which I won't get into here). On this album, Kendrick knows that his previous albums are very highly regarded, and he is entering this with a sense of humility, knowing that if he messes this up, his legacy could be tainted. You can feel his struggle with trying to keep his audience happy and still making music creative enough to stand on its own.

Regardless of whether or not he releases the rumored follow-up this weekend, "DAMN." stands as a crowning achievement of not only modern hip hop, but the music industry in general. I know there are a lot of things I didn't go into on this album, but if I did, I'd probably go over the character limit.

Kendrick is back with a strong follow up to TPAB. The album is punchy and aggressive at times, but reserved and gentle at others. Best tracks: The Whole Album.

A less deranged response to celebrity than Kanye West’s Yeezus, more imaginative than Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP or Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, it shares with the former an economy of form, and with the latter two the giddy energy of an artist coming into perfect sync with their audience. It’s also a sumptuous sounding pop record, polite streamlined mass market psychedelia. [Jun 2017, p.64]

DAMN. sees the rapper make a 180 degree turn from the sprawling jazz/funk/hip-hop odyssey of TPAB to deliver 14 taut, tough and wise cutting-edge examples of what’s possible in hip-hop today. ... Essential stuff.
