  1. For the most part, Ms. Knowles does more reinventing than revisiting.
  2. A solo album to put all solo albums to shame.
  3. 80
Her reach is remarkable. [Aug 2003, p.120]
  4. The first half is good enough to make Dangerously in Love one of the best mainstream urban R&B records released in 2003.
  5. The best evidence of Ms. B's growth as an artist (and woman) is seen in the ballads and mid-tempo tracks.
  6. One of the most refreshing modern R&B records from a diva-ascendant in a long time.
  7. Before descending without hope of return into the treacle swamp of R&B ballad hell that beckons at the halfway point, 'Dangerously In Love' offers a few passable moments.

It's not so much that the most singularly talented and important soul singer of now has let us down, more she's tried too hard to please. [Sep 2003, p.105]
  9. She has good songs, but no great songs. [Aug 2003, p.105]
  10. While she oozes charisma and has a fine voice, Beyonce isn't in a class with the likes of Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey as a singer. [24 Jul 2003, p.86]
  11. 60
At times... Dangerously In Love sounds desperate to reach every demographic. [Aug 2003, p.150]
  12. Not, by any means, a disaster. More a cruel glimpse of a talent that occasionally blazes but is frustratingly inconsistent.
  13. Unfortunately, the rest of Dangerously in Love is only intermittently sexy.
  14. 40
Things degenerate into a dreary stream of self-pitying/self-mythologising ballads. [Sep 2003, p.106]
  15. Beyoncé never met a ballad she didn't like. Out of Dangerously in Love's 14 tracks, a staggering eight are the kind of overwrought, no-tempo love songs even Toni Braxton has the sense to avoid.

I like Beyonce. She's gorgeous, talented and appears to be pretty grounded. But upon the release of her debut solo disc Dangerously In Love (and amidst the critical acclaim it garnered) I decided to get the album--boy, did it disappoint! The first handful of tracks (especially the international horn-blarin' smash single "Crazy In Love") sounded brilliant, everything I expected the ex-Destiny's Child leader to produce as a solo artist. But halfway through and this shockingly long record starts getting bland--it's not that they're not credible, respectable songs, it's just that they're bland and Dangerously gets a bit dangerously close to being too ballad-influenced. Beyonce's stellar and oft-fluid singing skills certainly help listeners get through the tepid, boring material. Decent, credible and definitely a respectable attempt, but nothing brilliant--get B'Day instead if possible. Full Review »
