  • Summary: The American Idol winner's first album on the RCA label, produced by Rob Cavallo and Brian Howes, features songs co-written by Chris Cornell, Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik, and Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 4 out of 6
  2. Negative: 1 out of 6
  1. The producers give David Cook's clutch of bombastic verse-chorus- verse rockers an impressive melodic sheen, one well suited to Cook's husky, expressive vocals.
  2. David Cook [is] remarkably similar to the debut of his AmIdol forefather, DAUGHTRY, but where Chris Daughtry wallows in his stylized amorphous angst, Cook is a friendly puppy dog, eager to please.
  3. The Johnny Rzeznik-assisted opener 'Declaration' sets the tone--guitars, lots of 'em--and 'Light On' has its Soundgarden-like charms, but without the right hook, 'Life on the Moon' and 'I Did It for You' come off like assembly-line active rock.
  4. 30
As overblown as he is oversensitive, reaching toward the rafters whether his jumbled platitudes about wounded relationships warrant it or not, Cook is more like Michael Bolton in a T-shirt.

Every song is a gem. Ignore the 1s. We know who they are and why they give this CD a 1 and it won't work. David Cook is here to stay.

Overall, I think this is a good first major label attempt for Cook. Some songs, such as 'Bar-ba-sol' and 'Permanent', are unique and really stand out. But there are others like 'I Did It For You' and 'Come Back To Me' that fall on the more generic side of pop-rock. My favorite songs are 'A Daily AntheM' and 'Kiss On The Neck' which sound much more like the musical style Cook had before his Idol days. I enjoy the album and recommend it, but people expecting hard rock songs will probably be disappointed. Expand

Quality sound and vocals by David Cook. The album needs more personality though, because after half way through the songs begin to sound the same and getting to the end becomes tedious. I cannot speak badly of his talent though, and am looking forward to his future work. Expand

I wanted to like it, I really did but it i just too over produced and not nearly as original as his AI arraignments lead one to believe. I hear this type of mediocrity every time Daughtry and Nickelback are played. At least we have Jack White to save rock n roll right??!! Expand
