  1. While it may lack the immediate magnetism of Weathervanes, there's plenty of reasons to think when all is said and done, Diluvia will be the album that carries them forward and cements their status as one of New York City's most creative and rewarding indie bands.

Diluvia offers up a perfectly rendered snapshot of the cresting East Coast indie pop scene, conjuring up images of nomadic laptop studios, vintage bicycles, endless stacks of tattered Tor paperbacks, and heavily tattooed, non-smoking urbanites noshing on locally grown produce.

There's lots of talent in this New York sextet, but it gets lost in all the unbridled exploration and layers.

Diluvia's narrative gets borne into worlds beyond ours, exploring space for new galaxies and life-forms.

The music is consistently impressive. A calmer, mellower than its predecessor, affair, Diluvia is an enchanting album worth several listens.

Diluvia demonstrates growth for the band by finding a happy medium between a familiar sound and some well-placed surprises.

The vocal harmonies, synths and fancy banjo plucking are highlights on an album filled with enchanted imagery.

While they still, ahem, swim in highly populated waters alongside Local Natives and king fish Sufjan, here Freelance Whales have made a strong argument for their crucial place in the current pantheon.

Diluvia is an album that requires time and attention, but is ultimately worth every listen.

With this grower, Freelance Whales have avoided the sophomore slump and grown into one of indie rock's most intriguing new acts.

Diluvia is a simply captivating album, tastefully marrying addicting electronic hooks with beautiful folky strings, all tied together by entrancing vocals. Although not an immediately pop-ish album, Diluvia instead focuses upon emotion and atmosphere, creating a sound that is altogether a breath of fresh air and a very worth-while listen. If you're looking for interesting song structure, heavy emotion, beautiful instrumentals, and a highly enjoyable electronic style, then you've picked the right album. Full Review »
