Dizzy Heights is a bold, wonderful affair. [Mar 2014, p.113]

This potent return affirms Finn heeds his own advice. [Mar 2014, p.90]

The overall sense of experimentation arguably makes Dizzy Heights Finn’s most surprising and accomplished release since Crowded House’s Together Alone, the work of confident tunesmith daring to stretch himself.

Finn's third solo album is a lush, multi-layered affair, making full use of its producer. [Mar 2014, p.76]
  5. Wilfully abstruse, then, but still one hell of a talent.

Dizzy Heights is an apt title for an album airborne with vertiginous harmonies and references to astronauts and flight.

They’re certainly a partnership and there’s lots of adventure here. Dizzy Heights is certainly as inspiring as anything Finn has produced for a long time.

It is a seamless blend of Finn's longstanding popcraft and latter-day adventure, and it satisfies on both counts.

Finn sounds best when Dizzy Heights is at its dizziest, when he has to completely rethink how his voice fits a song. On the other hand, he sounds slightly less engaged on the more straightforward tunes, which perhaps don’t offer the same heady challenges.

The former Split Enz and Crowded House frontman goes for the jugular by taking a chance with a delightfully fresh sound.

It may not be an album most would expect from Neil Finn, but it’s clearly the one he wanted to make.

As the album hits its stride it heads squarely into AOR territory, and one or two tracks could have been a good minute shorter, but even tracks such as the pop-rock single Flying in the Face of Love are lifted by superior production.

It’s disjointed and discomforting, and certainly easier to admire than actually enjoy.

While Fridmann (best known for his work with Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips) weaves his usual psychedelic magic, the accentuation of purely sonic elements--glitchy loops, textural effects, the miasmic tone--is at the expense of Finn’s core songwriting strengths.

It just seems that Dizzy Heights is just Finn noodling about, unsure of what direction to take, and the whole deal feels painfully laborious.
