It's a welcome reminder of this band's current status, because one hopes that Do Whatever You Want All the Time isn't an end, but another new beginning.

Here, they iron it out into something more epic and exploratory. Strange basslines float under guitars that riff on high-life note-picking and fractured, heavy rhythms.

It is gleeful and vigorous, full of echoes, pan pipes, samples and shimmering surf guitars. [Jun 2011, p.94]

In Ponytail, that long-ago art project seems to have spawned the real thing – a band with an imprint and sound all of its own, with much of joy to share around.

It's hard to tell if the seemingly random, incoherent screeching and shouting from Siegel is meant to be a gimmick, a cop out or a totally genuine mode of expression. Whatever it may be, it's working.

Paradoxical as it may seem, the more structured version of the band that Do Whatever You Want All the Time presents just may be more exciting, and offer more potential, than what Ponytail were doing before.

This is punk rock that's both intellectually challenging and young at heart.

Siegel's Yoko Ono-esque vocals may be a hurdle for fussy listeners. but the indie rock scene needs such joyful music. [May 2011, p.86]

Ponytail fans will surely enjoy this relatively formed incarnation of the band's energy.

Do Whatever You Want All the Time is a candy-colored descent into madness, one which tames the wildness of the group's previous efforts in the interest of a far more mature style.

Do Whatever is far less dense and frantic than Ice Cream, and conjoined guitarists Dustin Wong and Jeremy Hyman don't operate in open space as well as when they're forced to dodge their own obstacles.
  12. Do Whatever...sounds less like inhibitions being shed, less like sex with a tree trunk after a hallucinatory, three-day Haribo bender than their other stuff - and that's kind of a shame, too.

Ice Cream Spiritual actually looks like the more sophisticated record, and the one with more candy-coated draw for listeners.

Do Whatever You Want All The Time is tepid and uneventful, and proof that the band's previous work didn't succeed solely on its raucousness.

To truly grasp the vigour of Do Whatever You Want All The Time, do it yourself. Grab four mates, pick up some instruments and go nuts. Just don't cut an album from the sessions.
