Dream Cave is one of those albums that unfolds like origami, each song revealing itself as its own unique world within an overarching, carefully-crafted universe.

There's a pleasing, high-pitched ache to frontman Alister Wright's vocals, and an ambivalent feeling has the album sliding between 70s rock-hippy sweetness (with its full-band harmonies and Fleetwood Mac-style flourishes) and moodier fare.

This eclecticism of emotion expressed instrumentally and lyrically is indicative of a matured songwriting style, and absorbs the listener at every turn.

With just the right balance of brooding and brightness, Dream Cave is one of those albums that seems tailor-made for rainy day reflection, with Cloud Control giving listeners just the push they need to go into their own heads and look around for a bit.

Not all of it works but tracks such as the duskily euphoric Dojo Rising; Moonrabbit, all sunny, West Coast harmonies; and Ice Age Heatwave, which sparkles on a soundscape of otherworldly guitars, are epic in both sound and ambition. [Nov 2013, p.102]
