  • Summary: The two years Canadian artists Alex Zhang Hungtai spent on the road is the concept behind his double album as Dirty Beaches.

  1. He’s fulfilled every promise made by Badlands and then some, and despite whatever depths of pain made such an eruption of shattered awesome possible, he’s managed not just one of the best albums of the year, but one of the most genuinely moving, as well.
  2. May 17, 2013
This minimal format emphasizes Hungtai's talent for setting a skin-crawling mood.
  3. Jun 6, 2013
Though it’s tough to get a sense of what exactly it is that’s causing all of this suffering, the details don’t seem so important in the end, as Drifters / Love Is the Devil is the sound of pure isolation and dread wrapped in one bleary, beautiful package.
  4. 75
Drifters/Love Is The Devil isn’t always an unqualified success, but more often than not it displays Dirty Beaches as a project increasingly adept at the scattershot of styles, imprinted with Hungtai’s own recognisable mark.
  5. Jun 19, 2013
As tough sledding as Drifters/Love Is the Devil can be both psychically and musically, there are enough moments of enlightenment that make you more than willing to follow Hungtai wherever he goes.
  6. 70
Hungtai’s ideas swing rapidly from beautiful to chaotic to completely atonal.
  7. Jun 5, 2013
This is the album Hungtai needed to record, but not necessarily the record his burgeoning audience wanted to experience.

BPM said it the best, such an eruption of shattered awesome. This albums filled with pain yet it shouts through it like its having a big drunk, drug filled party, rarely giving into the pain and when it does, beautifuly. One of the best of the year. Collapse
