On what could very well be the band’s breakthrough record, they continue to trade on the values that have won them so many fans up until now--deeply unfashionable concepts such as patience, simplicity and reliability.

Sure, Ultimate Painting know their influences, but what shines through most of all is the sheer diversity and inventiveness of their songwriting.

Dusk goes nowhere, basically. It ambles, seems happy to hide behind the sofa, but is charming, feels totally complete and when it ends you feel the urge to hit repeat. Again.

Once again, a thoroughly pleasant aural experience; an enjoyable slice of dreampop that subtly introduces and shifts between a variety of influences to keep the listener interested.

Some tweaks are almost imperceptible, but when administered at the right place and the right time, Dusk shows an incidental dynamism that Ultimate Painting haven’t shown before.

While it’s a formula they work to, it never sounds formulaic.

We’ve seen more than enough spark between the two on previous efforts to know that there’s a future for them; it’s just a shame they chose to rail against their best instincts this time round.
