The final product can both unnerve and captivate, though not at the same time. As far as consistency, well that's another story.

Alas, the new Earth Sound System is a particularly undecided record, offering two disparate approaches that make no attempt to cohere. The caveat "your mileage may vary" has rarely been so applicable.

Reaching a jubilant, freak-flag waving climax with the garage sloppiness of Where We Go, what's left is a quieter set of herbal spirituals that continue to link strands of country, folk and blues with the group's own beautifully wayward sense of direction. [Jul 2011, p.105]

[Where We Go] is far and away the most interesting, listenable yet challenging, thing on this patchy and unfocussed album.

Greenwood and co.'s impulses have grown disappointingly easy to dissect. The result is music that, by any definition, remains experimental and difficult, but the invigorating internal tension between the ordained simplicity of American musics and the free-will noise jams has evaporated.

Earth Sound System just isn't the place for Jackie-O Motherfucker newcomers to start--Valley of Fire and Ballads of the Revolution would be better suited for that purpose-as the album is a very mixed bag and one of this signal band's duller efforts.

No shocks here, perhaps, but their fractal Technicolor pop is always a joy. [Jul 2011, p.87]
