Encore is a massive dissapointment of a follow up to The Eminem Show, & the beginning of Eminem's fall from grace.

    Best track: Like Toy Soldiers
    Worst track: My 1st Single
Best feature: 50 Cent (I guess)

Half of the songs are decent at worst and fire at best, while the rest are just plain terrible. I know Eminem's drug addiction and the release of Straight from the Lab really destroyed this album, but even then, what was he thinking?

Eminem's most overhated album. Let's see if your favorite rapper will be remembered this way in 10 years. Encore has almost 20 years and it's still one of the most streamed rap albums.

How is this album ranked so high? It is easily his worst album and is top 20 worst album of all time. Every single Drake album and mixtape is better then this steam pile. The reason this isn't a 0/10 is because of Toy Soldiers, every other song on this album is not good.

Underwhelming and bland album that took too long to make. I understand Eminem had issues with addiction during album recording, but surely it doesn't take that long to make a sub-par album like this. Some highlights include the features with 50 Cent and Dr. Dre which have good lyrics. The Eminem Show was a lot better than Encore.

It's not Eminem's best, but also not his worst. This was somewhat early Eminem just before his hiatus so it still has that early 2000's Eminem sound. Never Enough is a solid up-tempo banger which is more serious but not overly sentimental as is Evil Deeds. The song Encore is also a good club banger with a hard-hitting beat. The album's shortcomings are in the overly sentimental hip hop ballads like Mockingbird, Crazy In Love doesn't really work as a hip hop love song. Puke is yet another song dedicated to his estranged wife Kim with harsh, biting lyrics. Like Toy Soldiers is decent if a little mawkish. Expand

However, despite some of the most dreadful and obnoxious songs Eminem has ever released showing up here, there are Brilliant tracks in the form of Yellow Brick Road, Like Toy Soldiers, Mosh, Encore and We As Americans. But even the best songs have to suffer from drugged up Eminem's antics, I don't know why this came to be but thank god we live in a reality where Eminem beat his addiction, this would've been a sad finale to his career.

Encore is a personal favorite of mine. You have a bit of everything of what you expect out of early 2000’s Eminem. You have the Slim Shady alter ego reappearing once again in “Just Lose it”, You have the usual Kim relation issues in “Puke”, you have daughter recognition in “Mockingbird”, and rocking club hits like “Encore”. Then you have Eminem revealing a slim shady ego “Rain Man”, and following “Square Dance”, a more political Marshall Mathers in “Mosh” and “We as Americans”. This is a turning point of Eminem who’s beyond his height of Fame, and is now addicted to drugs, and struggling to see the light of day. Though the middle was redone because of bootlegging of unreleased songs for “Encore”, it had failed to match the energy or amazement acquired by “The Eminem’s Show” or even the first 3-5 songs of “Encore”. Great Album, but could’ve been pushed back a couple months to resolve its issues, or been better off a scrapped album. Expand

After three successful studio albums, Eminem had room to be complacent. There are profound songs which dig deep into Eminem's personal life and give great insight on what it is like to be in Eminem's position: Mockingbird, Like Toy Soldiers, and Yellow Brick Road. The bonus tracks, We As Americans and I Love You More, are also among the best tracks of the album. He explores his childhood of being a white person in a predominant black neighborhood, his love experiences after his divorce with Kim, his relationship with his daughters, his political views on the Bush Administration, and his involvement in the feuds of the hiphop industry. Other songs such as Puke, Crazy In Love, Just Lose It, and Evil Deeds are certainly much closer to pop than the hardcore rap he was known for, but they are still catchy and fun to listen to. This album has very strong production values, some coming from Dr. Dre, though some of the greatest beats Eminem used were wasted on terrible lyrics, which seem to have been scribbled down with little thought to them and they were just stringed together with words that rhymed with each other. A prime example: "Why do they make Yoo Hoo / Kikkity ka ka poo poo". Eminem in this album was unable to distinguish funny from silly. In the song Ass Like That, it was an entire song about a hand puppet. The track My First Single has a beat which makes the random filler lyrics barely audible. Rain Man, as Eminem admitted at the end of the song, is a song about nothing. Big Weenie, an intended diss against Benzino, has a disjointed flow and humiliates himself with childish insults such as "you look like a frog" and "your breath stinks". This album is not flawed because it was fundamentally wrong. It had potential to be much better than its predecessor. Overall, the album is mixed. It shows the best of Eminem and the worst of Eminem. Probably the first Eminem album with a few choice cuts. Eminem ventures even further away from Slim Shady (the horrorcore-comedy style) and focuses more "Eminem" who is fierece, clever, and conscious of his surroundings. "Eminem" is just there to give it to you straight. Sure, he doesnt try to be ultimately perfect but the bottom line is, he's gonna give you all he's got. Despite that notion, it seems he gave his all rather fell a tad flat. There is still a trace of humor "Rain Man" (although it seemed harsh with the Christopher Reeve reference, being that he passed away the month before the album came out), Big Weenie, & Just Lose It. The one humor based track thats sweet & sour is Ass Like That. The good part being that we see the rather unexpected yet very laughable humor of Eminem rather than "Slim Shady". The bad part is the subject matter is one in which one is not so used to hearing from Eminem which is one aspect of him that set him from other rappers. It took me 2 years to buy the album after I heard "Just Lose it", and its a disappointment, but its got a few good songs on there. I also think its funny how you can tell an eminem fans age by what their favorite album is. The younger they are, the more likely "The Eminem Show" is their favorite. See if I'm right...

Anybody who gave this album above a 3 should stop listening to rap, ur just messing up what albums sales should really be like and are the reason real hip hop is dead, there is not 1 song on this album worth listening to, he should never make a form of music again.

'The Marshall Mathers LP' was his best album, but he raised a lot of questions concerning his character with it. He proved that he was basically a good guy with 'The Eminem Show'. That one wasn't a bad album by any means, but it represented the end of Eminem's good ideas as far as producing goes, and the near end of Dr. Dre's good ideas concerning producing as well (save for a few good tracks on 'Get Rich' and 'The Documentary', he's been in a rut, to be brutally honest). So, where does 'Encore' fit in? Well, it doesn't; Eminem gave us peace of mind with 'Show', and also a satisfying 'ending' to his career. The only possible motivations behind 'Encore' and the more recent 'Curtain Call' are 1) For Eminem to prove that he's a good producer (and if that's the case, then he's failed), and 2) Money money money. True, Eminem has some great songs on this album--"Mosh" and "Like Toy Soldiers" being the two that everyone can totally agree on. But there's the problem of every song sounding either identical or juvenile: sweltering strings, predictable backbeat, strange catchphrase used from a previous song. Not even "Mosh" was immune to that, as it began with the same phrase that Eminem used on "Square Dance". "Mockingbird" has been the same song that Eminem has sung for years now, and even though it's still affecting, it's still a little boring. The guest spots don't do anyone any favors; Nate Dogg peaked before 'The Eminem Show' was released, and Obie Trice still sounds annoying. At this point, every silly song that Eminem does sounds simply stupid. It's been a long time since "My Name Is", when Eminem got by with a sweet beat and some hilariously awesome rhymes. There's nothing keeping him from doing it again, and doing it as many times as he pleases, so long as he has shown improvement. If anything, Eminem has gotten worse with age. If you want incredible present day production, check out 'Beauty and the Beat', 'Late Registration', 'Madvillainy', 'Grandmasters', and even the 'Get Rich Soundtrack'. If you want incredible rhymes that defy expectations, examine the work of 7 of the 9 members of Wu-Tang (nobody and their grandma gives U-God and Inspectah Deck the time of day), Dizzee Rascal, half of Jay-Z's catalogue, MF Doom's more inspired work, Ludacris (if you can handle hit-or-miss production), and Common. 50 Cent's best album, it should be noted, featured little help from Dre, and no help from Eminem. I'm referring to the 'Get Rich OST'. 50 Cent sounds like the guy who originally got the attention of smart rap critics. If 50 Cent can do it, then Eminem can, too. But first, Em has to set fire to his production equipment. Then, and only then, can he start down the road to redemption. Expand

What surprises me the most is the fact that people liked this album. Eminem is an awesome MC and I have loved everything he released prior to this, even the first D-12 record. The only saving grace was the bonus CD as the album itself has about 3 songs worth listening to more than once. I'll admit, even the ridiculous 'Puke' and 'Ass Like That' made me laugh the first time around, but like any joke, the effect wears off rather quickly and it becomes glaringly obvious that they were just crap. Also, Eminem's shock value has run out. He has said so many disgusting / immature / shocking things in the past that it has completely lost its effect. I've also come to expect a little childishness and vulgarity from him and wouldn't usually mind, but it seems to be the main focal point of this lyrically sparse, attention-seeking, abomination which in my opinion will mar his formerly untouchable reputation forever. I just hope the next album will be a return to seriousness for everyone's favourite white boy, as this is often where he shines. Expand

All the recent CD's After math has released have been garbage except Game's CD. Don't believe me that Em's lyrics on this album are weak, take a look for yourself: BRAIN DAMAGE (Slim Shady LP) These are the results of a thousand electric volts A neck with bolts, "Nurse we're losin him, check the pulse!" A kid who refused to respect adults Wore spectacles with taped frames and a freckled nose A corny lookin white boy, scrawny and always ornery Cause I was always sick of brawny bullies pickin on me And I might snap, one day just like that I decided to strike back and flatten every tire on the bike rack (Whosssssh) My first day in junior high, this kid said, "It's you and I, three o'clock sharp this afternoon you die" I looked at my watch it was one twenty "I already gave you my lunch money what more do you want from me?!?" He said, "Don't try to run from me, you'll just make it worse..." My palms were sweaty, and I started to shake at first Something told me, "Try to fake a stomach ache it works" I screamed, "Owww! My appendix feels like they could burst! Teacher, teacher, quick I need a naked nurse!" [N] "What's the matter?" [E] "I don't know, my leg, it hurts!" [N] "Leg?!? I thought you said it was your tummy?!?" [E] "Oh, I mean it is, but I also got a bum knee!" [N] "Mr. Mathers, the fun and games are over. And just for that stunt, you're gonna get some extra homework." [E] "But don't you wanna give me after school detention?" [N] "Nah, that bully wants to beat your ass and I'ma let him." BIG WEENIE (Encore) Alright listen, I need you to focus I need you to go dig deep in your mind, this is important We are going to perform an experiment of the sorts I'm going to have to ask you to bear with me for a moment Now I need you to open your mind-your eyes close them You are now about to be placed under my hypnosis For the next four and a half minutes We are going to explore into your mind To find out why you're so fuckin' jealous Now why did they make Yoo-Hoo? Hippity ga-ga boo-boo Psych, I'm kidding I just wanted to see if you're still listenin' Ok, now I need your undivided attention Sir I have a question Why do I always sense this undeniable tension From the moment that I enter into the room It gets all quiet and whispers Whenever theres conversation, why am I always mentioned? I've been dying to ask, it's been itchin' at me Is it just because If you can honestly tell me that the Encore lyrics are as good as the Slim Shady LP lyrics, you do not deserve to listen to hip-hop. Nuff said. Collapse

  1. "Encore" is almost willfully uneven: it includes some of the most exhilarating songs Eminem has ever recorded, alongside some of the most inert. [15 Nov 2004]
  2. For the most part, Encore's strained, vaguely sad, regressive wackiness makes a lucid and compelling argument that Eminem should retire Slim Shady and let the real, serious Marshall Mathers stand up and be heard.
  3. Encore is a fourth fascinating record from Eminem, but it's also easily his weakest and, in many ways, tamest album to date.
