Wow, what was so good went so wrong. Em, this CD is horrible. Lyrical content and effort sound as if they were written by a 4th grader. The beats on this album suck too. Its a shame that one of the best lyricists of our time puts out crap like this and hurts his legacy. I listened to this crap only once and have not listened to it again. Its sad, but I think the 3 bonus tracks are the only good part of this album. All the recent CD's After math has released have been garbage except Game's CD. Don't believe me that Em's lyrics on this album are weak, take a look for yourself: BRAIN DAMAGE (Slim Shady LP) These are the results of a thousand electric volts A neck with bolts, "Nurse we're losin him, check the pulse!" A kid who refused to respect adults Wore spectacles with taped frames and a freckled nose A corny lookin white boy, scrawny and always ornery Cause I was always sick of brawny bullies pickin on me And I might snap, one day just like that I decided to strike back and flatten every tire on the bike rack (Whosssssh) My first day in junior high, this kid said, "It's you and I, three o'clock sharp this afternoon you die" I looked at my watch it was one twenty "I already gave you my lunch money what more do you want from me?!?" He said, "Don't try to run from me, you'll just make it worse..." My palms were sweaty, and I started to shake at first Something told me, "Try to fake a stomach ache it works" I screamed, "Owww! My appendix feels like they could burst! Teacher, teacher, quick I need a naked nurse!" [N] "What's the matter?" [E] "I don't know, my leg, it hurts!" [N] "Leg?!? I thought you said it was your tummy?!?" [E] "Oh, I mean it is, but I also got a bum knee!" [N] "Mr. Mathers, the fun and games are over. And just for that stunt, you're gonna get some extra homework." [E] "But don't you wanna give me after school detention?" [N] "Nah, that bully wants to beat your ass and I'ma let him." BIG WEENIE (Encore) Alright listen, I need you to focus I need you to go dig deep in your mind, this is important We are going to perform an experiment of the sorts I'm going to have to ask you to bear with me for a moment Now I need you to open your mind-your eyes close them You are now about to be placed under my hypnosis For the next four and a half minutes We are going to explore into your mind To find out why you're so fuckin' jealous Now why did they make Yoo-Hoo? Hippity ga-ga boo-boo Psych, I'm kidding I just wanted to see if you're still listenin' Ok, now I need your undivided attention Sir I have a question Why do I always sense this undeniable tension From the moment that I enter into the room It gets all quiet and whispers Whenever theres conversation, why am I always mentioned? I've been dying to ask, it's been itchin' at me Is it just because If you can honestly tell me that the Encore lyrics are as good as the Slim Shady LP lyrics, you do not deserve to listen to hip-hop. Nuff said. Expand

4- one for each song that was good. His songs for the most part are lazily put together just muttering whatever rhymes with the "predominenty" stupid noises he made in almost all of his songs. This may have been ok for his first album, but he has grown since then, and we see that in songs like "Mockingbird". But over all, his tracks are made for club music. Its less personal, and in turn, not good. Expand

The people who rated this low are out of their mind. They don't get Em. I listen to a lot of hip hop. Exactl which rappers out there actually say anything interesting? Only Eminem, Nas, Kanye, a few others. Almost all other rap is only good for the production. Young Buck's is a good example. With the exception of the Marshall Mathers LP, this is his best work. He's lyrically top notch here. If you don't like a lot of words cleverly rhymed, then yes, Em isn't your guy. Expand

I like this album altogether but it is not his best work. Some of the songs seem to sound the same as the songs he uses in The Eminem Show. I love Emimen still though he is a genius, he just didnt show it as much in this album as others.

ENCORE. Eminem's latest is definitely what his title says it is. You can tell he's just having fun after the Show. I don't feel it's meant to be what we've come to expect from Em. This is not even close to being a bad thing. True, there is a bit of the old style Slim in there. But, he also has a more fun flow going on. Not to say, I'm a fan of all the songs, neither was I on his last 3. But, nonetheless, ENCORE is a really good album. Don't listen to those professional jerks up there. Buy the album and experience Eminem again. Expand

Eminem sounds careless on this album. He takes his talent and fame for granted now. It is like he put this album out just because of popular demand, not because he wanted to put another masterpiece under his belt. Em, don't make music if you don't want to because thats how you are rapping on this album. The beats are mediocre also. Dre could have been more impressive.

I will admit that at first, I wasn't sure about this album but after listening to the lyrics I found that there was more meaning in his words besides the every-other- swear-word pattern approach he usually takes. This album is something that I can relate to and I felt he did excellent work getting his message accross. I love it.

One of the greatest lyricists of all time has officially turned himself into the single worst lyricist of all time. Encore is the perfect example of an extrodinary artist gone bad due to wanting to fit in with fellow rappers and following their trends. This album is absolute garbage.

Encore is the perfect title for this album, because it is more of the same old stuff. Nothing new, nothing original, just the same schtick. And while that was good enough back then, it's just growing old now. I mean, the lyrics "You make my peepee go da-doing-doing-doing?" back to the drawing board, em.

i am a huge eminem fan and that is no bs. ive been counting down the days on my calendar since august for this cd to come and, and well i gotta say i am disapointed. the eminem show was much better, i think he fooled around too much on this album, it wasnt very serious, just all jokes. althought i give credit where it is deserved, amazing songs are mocking bird, toy soldier, puke, and never enough. i could tell this cd wud not top the eminem show as soon as i took a look at the book inside. the pages were not as detailed, just small sh*t like that made you tell he didnt try. but i still love eminem and its still good good cd after u listen to it a few times. im disapointed but his next cd will be much better. u pass em. 7/10 Expand

I expected this album to be the way it is after hearing the first single "Just Lose It." Recycled rap is common now and Eminem just took himself out of the creative category and popped himself into the normal rap-crap category! Jesus! CMON EM! Michael Jackson?? It's sad man, think of something NEW! The beats are pretty bad. No effort whatsoever was put into this album. There are about 3 or 4 interesting tracks on the record out of 20! Once again I expected this to happen to Eminem sooner or later. I really hope this is it for him because this is known as his downfall album! He'd better stop now before getting worse. Expand

"Just Lose It" is hideous. It's just hideous, and the rest of the songs on the album are a bit like his other albums if those albums were worse. Politics is tackled with that loveable hip-hop naivete, making sure to say nothing that isn't painfully obvious and not even attempting to convert Bush supporters. But the single? These are chosen in order to represent the more palatable aspects of an unreleased album, and "Just Lose It" could not possibly be any worse. The beat sounds like the looped background music you'll hear while visiting a boring website, and the skills? Who'd know Em HAD skills to hear this garbage? The songs is an embarrassment, and wouldn't excite controversy if broadcast on the Disney Channel. And for my money, Tanner W. may be the biggest idiot who ever lived. Expand

Since when is a white guy dressing up like Madonna and Michael Jackson considered rap. Its nothing but rhyming words mixed in with the most annoying sound I have ever heard. Why was this made? What idiot actually allowed this to be made? I can't wait for the day when some new rapper comes around and makes Eminem the focus of his parodies. That will be funny.

Eminem is the Bob Dylan of our times. he is rapping about his life and what he knows.there are some silly songs, yet does anyone remember anything before the eminem show? If you are a talent artist usually you will have that one painting or album that defines your career. for eminem that may have been the eminem show an albun that is timeless and never gets old no mater how often you listen to it. All these music critic are brain dead from listening to to meny albums once over and giving it a rating. that is what they are payed to do and im sure there are stacks of disks laying on there desks. Luckily for a true music lover some albums don't go down easily on the first or 5th time. But i tell you the more i listen to encore the more i love it. Expand

This is an interesting album with foreshadowing of either his retirement or slim shadys. some of the sampling on this cd is unreal. plus i really like the inventiveness of creating the song mocking bird form a childhood song. Its wierd though cause he seems tired of the rap game. maybe he'll step down and move more into production. its true that this is not the most amazing album to come out of eminem but its still a very good album. it takes a second and third listen to really get it. also crazy in love is a wicked and intense song with such grit to the description of his relationship, but also i think that people who have had something other than a fairy tale relationship might see some of themselves in that song. Jesus, well, this is a slightly dissapointing recored really, considering it will be his last and the expectations. There are supreb moments 'mosh' is a battering, brilliant political polemic while 'like toy soldiers', is bold and majestic. 'mockingbird sounds slightly makwish but still quite affecting and 'encore' and 'just lose it' are pretty good fun but nothing is really classic save the 1st two i mentioned. 'Ass like that' is very clever and quite amusing but jesus is em really reduced to singing about people asses, crazy in love is reeeaaaly bad!!, a mixed bag Expand

When I first listened to Encore I was kind of iffy on whether I liked it or not, but now im hooked on it! Evil Deeds starts the CD off with a boom no doubt. Some songs Im not really feeling are like toy soldiers, mosh, puke, and big weenie. But when you look at songs like rainman, ass like that, spend some time, mocking bird, crazy in love and Encore...you can see Eminem's lyrics really come to life and see that he still has skill. I agree that this is his poorest album yet, but it's still better then a lot of other artists. Expand

Clearly not his best work and it shows through more than half the songs. Encore got a lot of hype and it really didnt deliver the punch Em usually brings. I threw my downloaded copy away. It shows he put more time into his 2pac (yet another rebirth) album than his own and the 2pac album isnt even that great using such artist as Obie Trice and D-12. The Beats were lukewarm and the lyrics were average at best. Is this the same Eminem that appered on the Slim Shady LP because that dude should stop buy. There are some good songs on here but there are stupid ones like "Little Toy Soldiers" which is stupidness at it's best. He attacks Ja Rule and at the same time he says you got to stop the hating. When an artist resorts to scatological humor and parodying parodies of the 80's in order to sell a record, it is time for him to die. Eminem's time to die came a long time ago, in my opinion, when he his major themes were bitching and homophobia. This album cinches it. Everything you hated about Eminem is back, and anything you might have tolerated has flown away. I give it a trillionth of a point, though, because the opening part of "Just Lose It" is catchy. I give this album a 9 out of 10 becuase it has some strong points and good songs (Never Enough, Like Toy Solider, Mockingbird) but some pretty weak songs (Crazy in Love, Ass Like That, One Shot Two Shot). Unlike most people/critics I didn't mind the crudeness and rudeness of the puking, farting, and birping sounds that are frequent on tracks like Puke and My First Single. Em made an excellent collabaration with 50 Cent and Nate Dogg on the song Never Enough, which is one of the best songs on the whole album. The collaboration with D12 One Shot 2 Shot could have been much better, and 50 Cent and Obie Trice gave sub par performances on Spend Some Time. 50 Cent appears again with Dr. Dre on the last track Encore, and despite his small verse comes up big. Although this album is not quite as good as The Eminem Show it's still good and worth buying. Expand

I know this album is not em's best work it's still better than 99% of albums out there, every song is good or great - no bad songs. Eminem proves that even with a sub - par album for his expectations, it is still an awesome cd.

I was quite disappointed by this one. A couple good/funny songs but there are some very bad ones on this one. And overal his lyrics are not that great.

Though there are a few half-decent tracks on the album, it simply doesn't compare to the Eminem we knew and loved years ago. He just doesn't seem to have that energetic spark that he is known for, and it shows in his work. Being a fan of Eminem, I was excited when I heard he was coming out with a new album, but after listening to Encore, I feel that he shoud've stopped after the success of the Marshal Mathers LP. I listened to it.... and I listened again.. and again. But most of the tracks are really boring. It took me by surprise, but the new Eminem album is a real disaster. It lacks originality, catchiness and some uptempo tracks. What a shame.

Where's the Eminem we used to know? The eminem who'd put time into every track? The eminem who once called himself a "perfectionist"? The only good songs are Puke, Mockingbird and Crazy in Love. Don't waste your money. This CD is a disgrace.

YO, you have to rate a review against an object 'all things' continum, not against Mr. Mather's past shiz. That means that Encore, while a letdown relative to Eminem (esp. for those expecting something more serious ala a Marshall Mathers 2 LP) the dude is still rocking the industry w./ wicked skillz. Bangers: Never Enough (50 sounds like he got his jaw fixed), My 1st Single, Rain Man (damn that song is getting torn up ... people are not getting the point of it), Curtains Down (watch for Encore yeah yeah), Yelllow Brick Road, Like Toy Soldiers (Em's respect for Dre is powerful) Expand

It's far and away Eminem's worst studio effort to date, but that probably isn't going to dissuade his more passionate fans. Surely this album will sell a few million copies, but at the cost of what? He could have upgraded the Slim Shady persona to fit his thirties, and make a truly classic album, but he tried to bring back the past, making for a sub-par release.

When I saw the reviews I was worried, but listening to this album I can safely say the critics are idiots, they are wrong, the have no clue. It's one of his best albums. Really. Eminem is a genius, but geniuses are often misunderstood.

hey i really dislike the overall rating of this album, because this new eminem cd i will admit takes a little adjusting to, but once you're there, any eminem fan should love it. em has matured over the years and proves that in his album, as well as seems to have resolved the anger he once had, now he relaxes with his sense of humor better than ever. every song of his tell a story w/out a whole bunch of bullshit that other rappers just spit. Dre', D12, and 50's presence in the album give it extra spice as well as em's good variety of singles that people would be crazy not to call singles. i agree with one of the other reviewers, this proves who's a loyal em fan, well you would be crazy not to be one after this one. check out never enough, mosh, rain man, spend some time, mockingbird, one shot 2 shot, etc etc it's all worth it although he hints at retirement, he leaves hope for the future, EMINEM IS THE FUCKING GREATEST thank you Expand

ugh. that's all. ugh. uninspired, sophomoric, and fails to push the envelope anywhere near the edge. maybe three decent tracks on this whole album, and the dr.dre produced beats sound monotonous and drab. makes a great coaster for your ice cold beverage.

Very dissapointing cd. He says it the best on "Like toy soldiers", "...There?s a certain line, you just don?t cross it/ and he crossed it/ I heard him say Hailie?s name on a song and I just lost it/ It was crazy, this shit went way beyond some Jay Z and Nas shit/ And even though the battle was won I feel like we lost it/ I spent so much energy on it, honestly I?m exhausted..." This cd has no creativity and it shows no advancement beyond 2 songs (like toy soldiers, mockingbird). Everthing else is very contrived and just plain silly. He is using a formula and great rap artists or groups dont(outkast, public enemy, jay-z, nas, tupac, biggie, epmd etc. etc.). Could you ever imagine Jay-Z saying Big Weenie??? Or tupac having farts and throw up on songs??? honestly, he should have shelved the whole project and started over i.e. Usher. I recommend you get a burned copy of the cd cuz its not worth buying. Hopefully this is his ugly duckling stage when nobody likes him, buts lets hope there is a swan coming. Expand

i only bought the album about 3 hours ago, i havnt even listened to all the tracks. but i think em hs came out tops here. ok, so he does sound tired - theres no other way to put it - and he could do with some bigger beats on some of the tacks to liven them up a bit, but form what ive heard, i tihnk its a great album still. toy soldiers is amazing. mackingbird is beautiful, mosh is cool, and so is puke, and never enough. ill have to listen to the rest before i can comment any further though. This is laughable. From being the white bloke on the block rapping through somptous DRE production to being a mere Weird Al Jankovic wannabe. What a fall.!This is shameful. Still confused on why DRE has followed this laughable exercise. The first 3 albums are in my collection this one belongs to my garbage bin. 1 for hoping that he actually just wanted to see how many idiots are out there.....slim shady is dead. Expand

Generally favorable reviews - based on 26 Critics

Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 12 out of 26
  2. Negative: 3 out of 26
  1. "Encore" is almost willfully uneven: it includes some of the most exhilarating songs Eminem has ever recorded, alongside some of the most inert. [15 Nov 2004]
  2. For the most part, Encore's strained, vaguely sad, regressive wackiness makes a lucid and compelling argument that Eminem should retire Slim Shady and let the real, serious Marshall Mathers stand up and be heard.
  3. Encore is a fourth fascinating record from Eminem, but it's also easily his weakest and, in many ways, tamest album to date.
