A very confident debut that is also quite unique, but this certainly isn't what the next Coldplay album "should have been". Coldplay excells at writing grandiose pop-rock, not dream-scape shoegazer rock. Most of the songs seem to be more focused on a mood or chord progression, which makes for less distinction between individual tracks - at least upon the first listen. The aural equivalent of a day alone on a windwept beach. Stunningly beautiful.

Nice but all songs resemble each other too much. Gets boring quickly. I give it 6.5. Anyone agree?

Engineers make dreamy music pitched between Doves and Air. Wonderful.

Great Album, I actually listened to the whole album while on a beach. Maybe that was able to swing my vote but I have to say that I was very impressed with this new band. Props.

Okay but this score is way too high. I put it just barely above Coldplay on my list for albums of the year. NIce to listen to but gets boring at times and the tendency to skip to the next track is often an overpowering urge that I cannot resist. Worth checking out though, like Doves-lite.

It's downright Floydian, tapping into kind of an ethereal spaciousness. This album sounds like what taking a valium or soma feels like; it has such a relaxed beauty about it. Maybe not everyday music for me, but you'd be missing out if you didn't give it a listen.

If shoegazing is the new black/brit-pop taken form in this debut effort by Engineers, it is a trend that will find little traction outside its native UK. Technically competent but dated, same-y and forgettable is the best evaluation I can conjure for this album.

Sustains a mood of quiet euphia throughout. Definitely not for rocking out to. I find myself going back to this disc frequently and the goosebumps still come. Bliss indeed.

  1. An early frontrunner for the UK album of the year.
  2. Engineers here prove capable both of emotive songwriting and of virtuoso studio craft.... Yet it falls shorts of true brilliance, for the simple reason that the band steadfastly refuse to rock-out.
  3. An incredibly warm and organic sounding debut.
