Mar 7, 2014Hood and Mike Cooley, the only original members left, handle all of the songwriting for the first time since the band's 1998 debut, and it makes for a unity of vision that prevents the grief from sounding gratuitous, that makes the uncertainties resonate with our own.

Would 2014 qualify? I guess it would. And "English Oceans" is the best Rock & Roll record the Drive by Truckers have made since 2008. I've been "Hearing Jimmy Loud" over and over. Congratulations and best wishes to the band… Expand

The last two records definitely we're going for something. While not bad records, they still were missing something. EO is an enjoyable record all the way through. A true DBT record. One of the best Cooley songs **** Shots Count" is the perfect opener. While "Pauline Hawkins" is just a good ol' fashioned jam. "Hearing Jimmy Loud" and "Til He's Dead or Rising" just don't get the credit they deserve. And Jay has been holding **** down for the last couple of records and for the love of god I hope he never leaves the band. He's just perfect for this band. "Natural Light" has that great honky think that I've been wanting from the band for awhile. The only slow part I would say would be "Made Up English Oceans". A political songs that doesn't quite go where it needs to go musically or lyrically. Needless to say, it's one of my top five.
