Song for song, this is one of the most powerful 32 minutes of music from 2010. Van Etten's songs are spiritual folk-rock love songs which are made for couples to earnestly share their deepest thoughts while enjoying a good bottle of wine and a long, warm winter bath.

Epic was one of those records I happened to just listen to one day, and what a great idea that was. Epic is easily one of my favorite records by a female artist. Her voice is so raw, so powerful. Epic by Sharon Van Etten is a really good collection of songs that details her thought process after getting out of an abusive relationship. Whatever. Good stuff.

Epic pulls from more corners. The voice at the center isn't arresting, exactly, but in the end that's unimportant. You'll want to stay.

The songs are still simple, but they're delivered with a sophistication only hinted at on her debut.

Epic might be a transitional work, but it finds Van Etten moving toward a strong, exciting sound.
