Some of these critics must be entrenched in big corp. life and are shallow as far as there music taste are concerns. This album makes me glad that I am alive. I love it and want to share with all my friends and the world.

I think this album is almost brilliant - granted , there are one or two bland tracks but the gems more than make up for it (something beautiful/me and my monkey). An entertaining album from a great entertainer ... nothing more - nothing less.

The reason this album will be lost on most Americans is the lack of the ability to understand sarcasm and the complete inability to be self depreciating. This is Robbie's whole persona... the cocky/cheeky stage presence is the whole value of Robbie - not to mention a strong singing ability. In a world where Dylan with the personality and entertainment value of a turnip and the voice of a cheese grater can be glorified - Robbie is well worth my entertain budget. Expand

I feel it's a really personal album. most of the songs are great, combined with humour. I just lvoed it, and I love Robbie Williams.

If the plan was to break Williams in the States, recording his most British album to date probably wasn't such a great move. Whilst its radio friendly melodies should have proved popular, the typically sardonic and "humorous" lyrics simply don't travel very well, and would have left most American listeners non-plussed. Add to that the fact that too many tracks simply sound the same and you have a deeply average album. Expand

Robbie Williams continues to advance his already unique style on this album. The songs have a refreshing rock edge, as well as some riffs that are reminiscent of old motown, like Rufus f/Chaka Khan. Now if only Williams could penetrate the market over here in America!

When I first listened, I'd give it 5 out of 10, as many of the tracks sounded too much the same. Now I've heard it through a few times and I can hear the layers in the music and seeing him performing them live only served to make me enjoy the intensity and humour. So up yours Playlouder and NME, lighten up or try doing it yourself.

This album is worth each cent. It's unbelievable that such a great musician like Robbie Williams has't achieved here the status he's got everywhere else...Sure this album will make him big because it's excellent. I give it a 10 out of 10.

This album sucks. Robbie Williams is about as authentic as a cheap Rolex bought on the streets of Bangkok. Some of the lyrics are laughably self-obsessed, and the music is about as middle of the road and bland as you can get.

I'm a big fan of Robbie Williams and British pop in general, but this cd is truly painful to listen to. Very disappointing.

i love the ways brits are always running down the yanks for not "getting" their sophisticated brand of humour... as an outsider, i don't think robbie williams is funny, or clever... he's just a singer of no substance with bland songs culled from decades of retro pop, dressed up in slick modern production... oh and for everyone who keeps on harping on the sarcasm angle, it happens to be the lowest form of wit... and robbie isn't even very good at it... This is a great album to sing along to if you're trying to learn. Especially 'Love Somebody' and 'Some Kind of Beautiful'. Definitely go with the UK vesion, though- U.S. version omitts some great tracks.

It is very brave for a man to confess what Robbie says in the album, the lyrics are great, the music is great and there´s a sense of humour in the whole album that many (male) critics fail to recognize blinded by their envy of the guy´s looks. Robbie Williams is a gifted singer regardless of the way he acts.

Very hard to dislike- more mature lyrics, framework of music and songs with good instrumentals including guitar.

Great album. Admist all the trashy singers out there with a vocal range of about 1 octave, Rob stands out as a singer with true talent and one of the only singers who can really hit a note properly. A very consistent album without many 'blockbuster' tracks, but none of them are bad so it stays pretty well. As for Ruedi Z, why the hell would you buy it again?

What's with the low critic score? After 9 years, this is still an album I remember. OK, there are a lot of self-indulgent and self-deprecating songs in here, but that's how Robbie is. I really do feel bad for him for having all that pressures to "break in America". The U.S. was never ready for someone like him, and it's their loss.

  1. It doesn't help that the best song here, "Feel," sounds like a bad Richard Ashcroft B-side; the worst is a seven-minute mariachi stomp about traveling to Las Vegas with a monkey, called "Me and My Monkey."
  2. Backed by stale songs, formulaic arrangements, and mediocre songwriting, Williams is forced to rely on his volcanic personality to bring this album across -- and despite a few strong performances, he sinks into lame self-parody time and time again.
  3. Probably the weakest Robbie Williams album to date.
