Fantastic album, dont know why its being criticized so heavily...while i agree they havent experimented in a big way, why should they do that just to prove a point to reviewers?

I didn't get it, why there are so many bad reviews about this album. I honestly think this is one of their best, i would go great lengths to say this is the best yet. But the first two also sounded the same. Common if you listen to a very popular rock band song (even without the vocals) you realise it's by so and so. That proves they also sound the same then why they are very popular. That's just because the media..Hard luck Hoobastank. Expand

I thought this was a great album. It starts painfully, with some bush/military bashing, but the following song kicks butt. If I Were You is as good a single as The Reason, and Without A Fight sounds something like Foo Fighters. Don't Tell Me kicks butt. All the other songs are solid songs too. My favorite Hoobastank album so far.

decent, not great... but decent - in particular lead single "If I Were You" and "If Only" - two standout moments.

Being catchy doesn't automatically mean being good. Such is the case with Hoobastank.

Okay, I really have to speak up about critics that get paid to give their opinion which is what we are doing and for some reason, we don't get paid. And why are they allowed to not like a certain genre of music but still get the opportunity to knock the music in a negative way. I am not a fan of certain forms of music and you won't see me on here ripping on something that might be great to others who know that style of music. Is it fair to give something a low score if you don't know anything about it? I gave this cd an 8 because the first 6 songs are very catchy, and the second song has one of the best openings I have ever heard in a song. It's very intense! The rest of the cd has great songs, but they don't have that spark that the first six have. These guys have their own style and atleast they don't carbon copy all of these other voices and styles of music, because in the alternative, indie rock world, that to me will receive a low score. Every song sounds different, you can here the words over the music. This cd deserves better reviews than this. Expand

Reaper, you've got it all wrong - Hoobastank doesn't constitute a genre - they are just a major label mainstream 'alternative' band creating utterly average (or below average) music. How could anyone who owns a radio or listens to music "not know anything about it?" This isn't original music, don't you remember how Hoobastank hopped on the scene after Incubus Reaper, you've got it all wrong - Hoobastank doesn't constitute a genre - they are just a major label mainstream 'alternative' band creating utterly average (or below average) music. How could anyone who owns a radio or listens to music "not know anything about it?" This isn't original music, don't you remember how Hoobastank hopped on the scene after Incubus hit it big? This CD highlights what's wrong with mainstream radio-rock fare - the hooks wear thin after a couple listens, and it is painfully obvious how the songs are 'engineered' to gain repeated radio play. Anyone who finds this music catchy, daring or expressive needs to get out a little more and listen to a broader range than a few FM radio stations. Collapse

Another generic cd from hoobastank. Their cd's keep getting softer and softer. Their faster tunes were the only thing that kept this crap bareable in the first place. Nothing creative nothing new. Just ..........

Very disappointing! A real let down from their last work, which was filled with addictive catches.

  1. But even if Every Man for Himself was constructed with the mainstream in mind, it likely won't win any new converts, since at their core Hoobastank remains unchanged: their songs aren't particularly dynamic or catchy, the band doggedly follows alt-rock conventions as if adherence to clichés gives the group legitimacy, and Robb's pedestrian voice alternately disappears into the mix or veers flat when he holds a note.

Nearly every cut shoots for maximum radio mileage, and the album's lack of stimulation makes such pandering harder to overlook. [20 May 2006]

There's something undeniably irritating but strangely satisfying about lyrics so baldly declarative, especially over riffs this explosive. [Jun 2006, p.144]
