    Everybody Down brings to life a plotline that’ll be more fully explored in Tempest’s debut novel, published by Bloomsbury later this year. It’s hard to imagine it being more gripping than this, though.

    Tempest delivers her labyrinthine tales with forensic detail offered gracefully like Saul Williams, Roots Manuva, Asian Dub Foundation and Tricky / Martina Topley-Bird on Pre-Millennium Tension (think “Bad Dream”).

    The fact that Tempest offers very little in the way of hope (the rest of the album's tale has been one of disaster so to believe any happy ending will last is naive at best) is representative of her bold story-telling, but it also means that through heavy beats and dispiriting lyrics, this is a tough album to get through in one piece.

    Everybody Down is powerful and gritty and it tackles subjects such as sex work and drug deals with wit and subtlety beyond measure. It’s just not as good as it perhaps should have been from such a prolific talent.

I have only until recently discovered Kate Tempest, and I can only say that I am impressed with her historical knowledge and modern (yet humbly sophisticated) language and writing. Also, her unique voice, compounded by her vernacular, is nice to listen to. To address the musical side, the album provides a unique sound— not UK grime; not American rap, but an interesting and inviting mixture between classic hip-hop, slow-paced DnB beats, house synths/FX, and simple storytelling. I highly recommend listening to this album.… Expand

She is happy to embrace her non-pop aesthetic, but she might need a little grooming.… Expand
