They have written seven albums in eight years, displaying subtle variance, growth and continuity. Their last album 'In the mountain in the cloud' wasn't adventurous enough, for a band with their creativity. Collaborating with Danger Mouse has really brought out the best in PTM. I could listen to this album all day, everyday. It has the songs, the production, great musicianship, thoughtful lyrics and a brings a fresh new style with it.

I have been a long time fan of Portugal. the Man, and though they have become more and more influenced by the pop aesthetic, they continue to produce beautiful melodies and meaningful music. It also is incredibly catchy, hook-filled music, with choruses that will sink themselves into your subconscious. Not my favorite effort from P.tM, but still worthy of high praise.

Best Portugal. The Man album yet. Every song on the album is enjoyable, and I really like the darker places they go on some of the songs. You should also watch the videos for all of their music, always fantastic.

The tightest, most aggressive PTM album of their career. The threads that tie back to their previous albums are intact, but their session with Danger Mouse refined the psychedelic sensibility that sometimes sabotaged their songs in the past. For a longtime PTM fan, this is an exciting turn in their career.

PTM's first album with Danger Mouse behind the boards most certainly shouldn't be their last. The stomping "Purple Yellow Red and Blue", title track "Evil Friends" and the sparse-yet-dense "Atomic Man" really allow Brian Burton to sprinkle his own pop sensibilities and structure around a wonderful collection of catchy riffs and hooks. John Gourley's lyrics are as instant and accessible as anything John Lennon wrote with similarly dark undertones (I would defy anyone not to be moved into a bought of self-awareness listening to "Modern Jesus"). Thank you Spotify for introducing me to this group. The mix on this album is perfect. The combination of catchy lyrics with signature instrumentals makes this album a 10 in my book.

Loved it. It's not as dreamy, flashy and psychedelic as In The Mountain In The Cloud and employs an overall more mainstream approach to the sound but nevertheless the result is superb. mixing together amazing fuzzed out punk, introspective lyrics, catchy choruses, and layer'd synth with acoustic guitar may not sound doable but again PTM manages to amaze and deliver

Been a Portugal the man fan for a couple of years now, but there has not been a better album then what they made with Danger Mouse. This album is flawless and the song styles range from arena rock (Atomic Man) to slow smooth songs (Waves. This album is spectacular.

Evil Friends is incredible! Big PTM fan here and although I was a little skeptical when I hear they were making a "pop" album my worries quickly disappeared once I started listening to the album. Just another step forward for this awesome band with their most catchy and diverse album to date. Hope this will cause PTM to get some much deserved attention!

It's a nice surprise from Portugal. The Man, still... I think they should consider getting back to the style of their oldest albums like Waiter!, Censored Colors or Church Mouth, they were strange as hell but extremely powerful!

From the start to finish they mange to hold your attention with great instrumentals and John's delightful falsetto. Even when they venture into slightly political territory with "Waves" and "Smile" they do so in a way that doesn't seem overdone. "Atomic Man" and "Purple Yellow Red and Blue" are some highlights for their sheer catchiness and addictiveness with the latter possibly being one of the best songs in their catalogue. Expand

Sure, they're not very hip, but Portugal the Man are anything but slouches, and Evil Friends is proof that some bands get big for being good, nothing else.

When an album’s quality level ranges from intolerable to merely tolerable, it’s not a positive sign. Middling.

The songs themselves don’t shine through the production.
