As a crossover it mixes the popular appeal of a boy band aesthetic and trite songwriting with undeniably catchy melodies and the requisite wall-shaking bass.

Evolution Theory is an album that has a base level thrill to its highlights but it is an ephemeral thrill that is fleeting on record, and there’s the sense that these songs will work best in the live environment where Modestep will excel.

It's all full-tilt anthemic intensity, whether they're tearing through drum'n'bass (Sunlight), grime (Burn, which has MCs Footsie and D Double E competing to extol the wonders of weed) or Skrillexish metalstep (Show Me a Sign).

While electronic music fans are not always a lyrics-first bunch, the sentiments here will probably sound better shouted at Glastonbury or Coachella than examined via earbuds.

Almost every sound here is precision-tooled for maximum obnoxious effect.

Fusing dubstep and rock worked for Pendulum but it's all too easy to get the balance wrong. Josh and Tony Friend's efforts have succeeded in getting their singles onto Radio 1's A-list, but it's an idea that stalls on their debut album. [Mar 2013, p.107]

Its dubstep. I for one am extremely picky when it comes to dubstep, and Modestep is a very original sounding group. Their album is a very good listen, and ill be happy to hear more from them in the future. Full Review »

The bass trends and other dubstep characteristics are worthy of more than a 7/10, but its the lyricism that I feel lets the album down. This album tries so much to be deep, when in reality, there is no requirement for dubstep to BE deep. Songs such as Bite the Hand, Praying for Silence and in particular Evolution Theory itself are songs that try so hard to be deep and meaningful, when dubstep fans don't want anything like that. The album's idea about Evolution Theory is a good one, but not one necessary or expected of a dubstep album. 7/10 Full Review »
