This is a good album, there's no denying that. The bass trends and other dubstep characteristics are worthy of more than a 7/10, but its the lyricism that I feel lets the album down. This album tries so much to be deep, when in reality, there is no requirement for dubstep to BE deep. Songs such as Bite the Hand, Praying for Silence and in particular Evolution Theory itself are songs that try so hard to be deep and meaningful, when dubstep fans don't want anything like that. The album's idea about Evolution Theory is a good one, but not one necessary or expected of a dubstep album. 7/10 Expand

I can see why critics don't like Modestep. Its dubstep. I for one am extremely picky when it comes to dubstep, and Modestep is a very original sounding group. Their album is a very good listen, and ill be happy to hear more from them in the future.

As a crossover it mixes the popular appeal of a boy band aesthetic and trite songwriting with undeniably catchy melodies and the requisite wall-shaking bass.

While electronic music fans are not always a lyrics-first bunch, the sentiments here will probably sound better shouted at Glastonbury or Coachella than examined via earbuds.

This is eclectic stuff. [16 Feb 2013, p.51]
