Think "winning formula" instead of "formulaic" and you're close to the value of Evolution, which along with Ferry Corsten's equally great WKND makes "trance ain't dead" the unofficial motto of 2012.

Not everything on Evolution is so sharply focused; the album's middle section especially, feels larded with the kind of big-room sound-scaping Van Dyk can probably punch up in his sleep at this point.

While Evolution is certainly well-crafted it won't be nearly enough to invigorate or re-invigorate anything or anyone.

All of this over eighty minute album are a typical for him trance compositions, created with the participation of artists who make up the vocals. Songs like "Eternity" - which was chosen single - destroys the effigy of the disc. Fortunately most of the material - including "Symmetries", "Verano" or "The Sun After Heartbreak" are characterized by expressive motives, so that any shortcomings are sliding into the background. Still, this is not the proposition of the highest quality. Expand
