Verano, Symmetries, The sun after heartbreak, The Ocean and Eternity are the albums standouts. Other than that most of the actual trancey stuff is pretty lame and forgettable and really drags. Far too many filler tracks to listen right through

Paul van Dyk on latest album "Evolution" does not confirm his good form, which you could expect from a man who twice was named the best DJ in the world. All of this over eighty minute album are a typical for him trance compositions, created with the participation of artists who make up the vocals. Songs like "Eternity" - which was chosen single - destroys the effigy of the disc.Paul van Dyk on latest album "Evolution" does not confirm his good form, which you could expect from a man who twice was named the best DJ in the world. All of this over eighty minute album are a typical for him trance compositions, created with the participation of artists who make up the vocals. Songs like "Eternity" - which was chosen single - destroys the effigy of the disc. Fortunately most of the material - including "Symmetries", "Verano" or "The Sun After Heartbreak" are characterized by expressive motives, so that any shortcomings are sliding into the background. Still, this is not the proposition of the highest quality. Collapse

Unlike a deadmau5 or Skrillex, Van Dyk can only do his one style, and by the time the album is two-thirds over, you're already ready for him to mix out. [#86, p.59]

Think "winning formula" instead of "formulaic" and you're close to the value of Evolution, which along with Ferry Corsten's equally great WKND makes "trance ain't dead" the unofficial motto of 2012.

Not everything on Evolution is so sharply focused; the album's middle section especially, feels larded with the kind of big-room sound-scaping Van Dyk can probably punch up in his sleep at this point.
