The grace notes, and thus the "6" rating I give for this release, can all be found in Dave Gahan's voice. No longer is he the Baritonebot 2000, and we're all glad for that. He actually sounds like the soulful crooner that his singing has merely suggested for virtually the whole of his career. Well done, David! Unfortunately, the songs he's been given to sing are simply The grace notes, and thus the "6" rating I give for this release, can all be found in Dave Gahan's voice. Well done, David! Unfortunately, the songs he's been given to sing are simply run-of-the-mill, lyrically and musically. The production is langourous as to be coma-inducing, and the subject of romantic obsession is dead tired. I have this album, yes, but if Martin writes like this for the next set, I will just have to be content to live with the earlier albums; if the next release has such banal lyrics and themes, I will not buy it. Of all the years of my fetish for their style of music,I have never , ever refered to the term 'sucky'.I've been lovin' their stuff since 1983,when DM first hit the airwaves of the U.S. I feel that the album had major potential had it more percussion and origional Mode tecnique.Voice and Acustic methods sound great, but amost all the tunes lacked beat.Example:'Free Of all the years of my fetish for their style of music,I have never , ever refered to the term 'sucky'.I've been lovin' their stuff since 1983,when DM first hit the airwaves of the U.S. I feel that the album had major potential had it more percussion and origional Mode tecnique.Voice and Acustic methods sound great, but amost all the tunes lacked beat.Example:'Free love'. 1. Exciter glimmers like a gentle ambient doodle with vocals: The beats are mostly minimal, closer to early Kraftwerk than to current electronica. But because Gore's songwriting is so focused and Gahan's vocal presence is so commanding, the softest songs leap to the foreground like a whisper from a lover.
  2. 70
Though not in the same league as Some Great Reward or Violator, Exciter is a solid effort and refreshing reminder of the variety of pop music.
  3. Like nearly any DM record, Exciter, their 14th album, mostly leaves one hungry for the inevitable remixes.
