Jun 9, 2020This album in simple terms describes chaos, even though the production might look like its all over the place its rawness is unparalleled in the grand scheme of her catalogue. Its the opposite of her last album where the lyrics this time seemed a bit dumbed down.

AaronOct 6, 2005Wow, is this one overrated. I hated, hated, hated this record. It should have stayed on the shelf. Sorry, but there was a reason she was hesitant about releasing this.

scottO-Nov 9, 2005overated. period, most interesting thing about the whole album is the producer controversy.

DougHOct 7, 2005You people are kidding yourselves. There's barely a melody to remember on this wandering, unfocused, self-indulgent offering. And I like Fiona Apple.

MinhNNov 21, 2005I am a huge fan of Fiona Apple and I found this album not even remotely as good as her previous works (tidal, when the pawn...) I've listened to it a half dozen times and have found nothing memorable about it. Sterile, lukewarm, and very very overrated.

Entertainment WeeklyThe cleaner take on Extraordinary Machine is like a trip to a less cluttered haunted house, and Apple's more nuanced delivery sticks the knife in, but slowly. It's both charming and devastating. [7 Oct 2005, p.72]
-
The New York TimesThere's a new layer of perspective on her magnificent third album. [3 Oct 2005]

With a less confessional and more confrontational attitude, this long-gestating album has lost the tenderness found on "Tidal" and some of "When the Pawn . . .," but her execution still commands attention. [8 Oct 2005]
