It's still a verdant, imaginative, lush, and occasionally unsettling work that hits the sweet spot more often than it misses its mark, and while it may not shake the rafters, it most certainly fills up the room with sound.

As the album progresses onto its second disc, it becomes even more spaced out and diverse. At times, the attempts to combine more abstract and challenging sounds fail to hold your attention. However, when this works well, as on the excellent ‘Sideways Glance', it’s a joy.

Fandango, their fifth album, is built of the same stuff [as 2011's Buffalo], though with a grander sense of scope and ambition. [Jun 2013, p.78]

The line between progression and self-indulgence in music is largely a flimsy one. However, The Phoenix Foundation walk it beautifully.

Only 17-minute finale 'Friendly Society' wears thin, its ideas forced and spread too thinly across clunky sub-sections. The rest, though, is languidly atmospheric, peaking with the moonlit disco jam of 'Sideways Glance'.

Though it doesn't sound a lot like Pink Floyd, it shares the quality of that group's early 70s records: it is leisurely, taking its time to reflect rather than rushing to a conclusion. The melodies, though, mean it never shrinks into the background.
