For 2012's The Connection, the steroid-heavy production was somewhat tempered so emotional catharsis could propel the album, and the same holds true for new collection F.E.A.R. (Face Everything and Rise).

Papa Roach may be a band out of time, but there's life aplenty here yet. [Feb 2015, p.113]

Ultimately, it's just this kind of self-flagellating, dark-hued rock aesthetic that's worked for Papa Roach for well over a decade, and despite whatever passing styles or trends in pop music they've ignored in the process, it's a sound that seems to be working for them.

Like Dorian Gray with a blowout, nu-metal holdovers Papa Roach have made their latest album sound like an eerie time capsule from the early 2000s.

The few songs with rapping on The Connection weren't that great. This album just isn't as good lyrically as The Connection. Another problem is that all the songs sound the same. There isn't much variety. Expand

Like most bands do when they hit a lot of success with a new sound, Papa Roach has taken their last album and tried to expand upon it. OnlyLike most bands do when they hit a lot of success with a new sound, Papa Roach has taken their last album and tried to expand upon it. Only this time with the electronic elements have been toned down. None of that is really a bad thing. After all it was "The Connection" that sort of reinvigorated the band. The problem is that the album runs out of steam quickly.

The energy you'll find in the single "Face Everything and Rise" is missing from the majority of this ten track album. I appreciate the more uplifting and emotional elements they carry, however I just wish that they didn't lose the energy of the first three tracks and that the lyrics were less generic.

Not even a guest appearance from Maria Brink of In This Moment can bring add any extra life to the later songs. Unfortunately she lays a role in the only song on the album I would call bad. She's fine, but the rap-rock nature of it is just awful. The other quest appearance is from rapper Royce Da 5'9". His contribution went rather unnoticed by me.

Overall I would say that it's a pretty solid album. I just wish it was heavier, louder, and more energetic. The slower songs and nature of "F.E.A.R." isn't actually a bad thing. It just makes for one of the weaker albums to come from this group. In the future I hope they go back to experimenting with their sound. As it stands the formula of The Connection still works here, but I feel they burnt it out. It's a good album, but a weaker one for the band.

    I give F.E.A.R. a 7.5/10.

There’s not a move we haven’tThe Nu-metallers return for their eighth studio album as a band out of time and safely wading in shallow waters. There’s not a move we haven’t heard hundreds of times before as they revamp former glories without a hint of innovation or progression. One has to groan and wonder how anybody could be so naive as to buy into this in 2015? Expand
