  • Summary: This is the second album for the Austin, Texas indie rock band.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 18 out of 20

  1. This slightly progger and grander follow-up bypasses such corny stuff until Track 8 begins a closing sequence of five lyrics-enhanced lite-jazzish tracks.
  2. Even more than on last year’s auspicious digital-only "Exposion," Austin’s White Denim stomp down the fine line between fertile versatility and iffy uncertainty. More often than not on Fits, this works out awesome.
  3. It’s also worth pointing out that as good as White Denim is at riling up your inner animal, they can also charm its socks off with tracks like the jaunty, upbeat 'Paint Yourself,' which opens with a lively acoustic chord progression that soon erupts into lo-fi pop bliss.
  4. Hearing all these different stylistic excursions at first makes for a rather disjointed listening experience, however, almost as if the band is overcome with the need to try to be eclectic. Yet repeat listens slowly reveal the brilliance of Fits, each element deftly playing off another to make for a remarkably cohesive rock time machine.
  5. White Denim somehow manage to cover all points of the musical compass without ever losing their overall sense of direction.
  6. Fits feels like the band's formal first LP--lots of what makes them unique, and then those somewhat awkward "growth" points. That initial itchiness, in other words, never really goes away.
  7. As 'Syncn' lilts to a close, it’s hard not to feel that White Denim would be better if they channelled a little of their chaotic diversity towards consistency, and focused upon being the very biggest, dumbest and craziest bunch of garage revivalists, rather than striking towards a uniqueness that is momentarily out of reach.

White Denim. Hipster? Maybe. Good? Definitely. I can honestly say, as a person who rarely enjoys most modern rock he hears, this was a damnWhite Denim. Hipster? Maybe. Good? Definitely. I can honestly say, as a person who rarely enjoys most modern rock he hears, this was a damn fine album. "Paint Yourself" was my favorite track, but it's all pretty good. Collapse
