“Flower of Devotion” is one of the most lively and inspired rock albums to come down the pike in recent memory — and hopefully will inspire a pack of like-minded young musicians, who’ve never heard of the bands mentioned above, to follow in its wake.

There’s a nagging instinct that pop songs are supposed to have more pieces to them, or that drummer Eric McGrady is supposed to be using more than half of a drum set. Stick with it, though, and something even better emerges from those gaps. By leaving their songs exposed, Dehd show how much they believe in them, and rightfully so. Their confidence in their concision is the best part.

It’s hard to refrain from spoiling each song as they’re all their own interestingly composed tracks that carry their own collection of winks, sighs, and shrugs. The only maybe downside is the minimalism of the album might come off a bit tired. But for the Dehd-heads — is that trademarked?— the album proves just how good of a band they really are, paradoxes and all.

The result is Dehd’s best album to date, a significant upgrade on their sound that finds their Windy City DIY scene-honed amalgam of surf rock, shoegaze and dream pop at its most melodic and expressive. The trio demonstrate newfound levels of intensity and focus on Flower of Devotion, leaving minimalism behind in favor of glossier compositions.

The pure power and energy that’s imbued in each of these songs is perfect for a live environment and there’s a sincere hope that Dehd get the opportunity to tour this album. The band’s crisp, no-nonsense approach filters into every aspect of Flower of Devotion and it makes for a heady, light-hearted escape from the complications of the world today.

On Flower of Devotion, production is sharper, lyrics cut deeper, and the palette is more diverse, making for a much more rewarding listen than last year’s Water and their 2016 debut.

Withering, in all the right ways. [Aug 2020, p.105]

The harmony the perfection the mixing of styles instrumentation and success. You can feel the pain uneasiness the queasy the upfront. The complementariness the support the need, the lyricly charged super weapons aimed at each other but no firing. Bright and colorful instrumentation with differentiations connectivity this album was driven served purpose for the artist and the listener. Just wow 10/10 Expand

Unique vocals, great songwriting, sonic guitar, a pinch of soul and a lot of fervor - record will be in rotation all year!
