  1. It's incredibly insular and sure of itself, but it's also smartly innovative.

Forcefield strips down the Tokyo formula to its most basic components of guitar riffing, a strong sense of melody and a brilliant ear for unforgettable hooks, which has birthed some of their finest work yet.

Four years after Champ, the whole thing feels like a step forward, or at least somewhere interesting, off to the side.

Sometimes doing what comes naturally is as big a risk as attempting to do something outside of your comfort zone, and that gamble paid off this time for Tokyo Police Club.

The combination of dreamy pop noir and the remorseless quality of the tunes suggest they'll soon be both big and clever. [May 2014, p.119]

    It’s unspectacularly solid stuff.
  7. 42
Tokyo Police Club’s signature sound, the niche that they carved out for themselves in a constantly fluctuating music scene (an emphasis on rhythm and abstract, maze-like lyrics with real emotion at their center) is almost completely gone, replaced by a rabid pop sensibility that sometimes works and sometimes really, really doesn’t.

This record is most definitely a grower, took a few listens to really appreciate it. Really enjoyed it, perfect summer music. Tunnel VisionThis record is most definitely a grower, took a few listens to really appreciate it. Really enjoyed it, perfect summer music. Tunnel Vision and Gonna Be Ready are probably the most un like TPC songs on here, but they work really well. Brilliant album, worth the wait. Expand
