They really hit their offbeat stride on Fortress with "Japanese Woman," the tale of a woman who "lives in my closet" and "eats up all my food when she thinks I'm at the office." [Aug 2010, p.150]
  3. Basically, Fortress will surprise some and maybe even anger others. But with the right Feel Good mindset, it can be a wonderful journey through the mind of some a.) interesting people or b.) interestingly intoxicated people. Plus, there are boobs on the cover.
  4. The Brooklyn-based foursome spends a lot of time here style-pinching, connecting dots already drawn by contemporary indie acts. And yet Miniature Tigers are often able to pull it off.
  5. The Tigers have no trouble doing vivacious and catchy without being cloying, so it's a shame they've shelved that skill.
  6. There are a lot of ideas, both musical and lyrical, packed into the ten songs on Fortress. For Charlie Brand and his band, the weirder, more complex ones seems to work out the best.
  7. The album is certainly more in vogue than Tell It to the Volcano--its blippy keyboards and amorphous arrangements sound very 2010--but that doesn't keep it from sounding less gratifying than the band's debut, which prized a good pop hook above all else.

This is an incredibly underrated album. It may not be the most original but it's definitely one of the most solid releases for a while. At theThis is an incredibly underrated album. It may not be the most original but it's definitely one of the most solid releases for a while. At the root of these songs is simple power pop, and the arrangements never take away from that. None of the songs seem under wrought either (which is a problem among modern power pop). In summary, I recommend this album wholeheartedly. Full Review »

The Miniature Tigers did a great job of mixing things up but still keeping the same charm they had in "Tell it to the Volcano." Up-tempo songsThe Miniature Tigers did a great job of mixing things up but still keeping the same charm they had in "Tell it to the Volcano." Up-tempo songs like "Bullfighter Jacket" balanced nicely with slower tunes like "Dark Tower." Overall a great and well balanced album. Full Review »
