Tanton's strengths are his ear for hooks and his brassy vocals, which lift the choruses on Freeclouds to billowy levels of '70s radio-pop splendor.
  2. Dec 2, 2011
    80
Freeclouds seems to be a culmination of many different ideas and styles all brought together in one album, and this diversity of sound is exactly what makes the album work so well.
  3. Dec 20, 2011
    80
Even with such varied ideas, Tanton maintains a careful balance, resulting in a fully realized album.
  4. Nov 16, 2011

Freeclouds has a little more up its sleeve than either a clear break from Tanton's past or a simple extension of it.
  5. Dec 8, 2011
    70
All these twists and turns threaten to render Freeclouds a somewhat scattershot affair, but somehow Tanton manages to make it all cohere.
  6. Dec 5, 2011

Freeclouds is an impressive set start to finish, and one of the most satisfying pop records you're likely to hear this fall.

Carter Tanton -- of the now-defunct Tulsa and still-thriving Lower Dens -- style-jumps so restlessly that his second solo disc sometimes feels like a multi-artist playlist rather than a one-man show.
