  1. Rowlands and Simons have a tighter grip on the material-an odd thing to say about an album with eight tracks built to sprawl, maybe, but Further really does flow from beginning to end, just the way its makers intended it to.
  2. This stripped-down effort forgoes the high-profile collaborations we've come to expect to create an unstrained, repetitive thumpathon that fits right into their catalogue.
  3. The whole album works something like an expansion on the last three fuzzed-out tracks from Dig Your Own Hole. The Chems aren't in the same do-no-wrong zone they were when they recorded that stuff, but Further brings them closer than anyone could've reasonably expected.
  4. 70
Eclecticism has always been the strength of the Chemical Brothers and with their seventh studio album Further they continue to develop musically.
  5. There's no risk here, but there's plenty that's right.
  6. 60
Steadfastly chirping crescendos, whinnying breakbeat stampedes, and the odd evocative vocal.
  7. Further is by definition not the most embarrassing music of their career--merely the most boring.

'Further' is like The Chemical Brothers' 'Human After All' or '808s & Heartbreak': misunderstood, but afterwards its influence is undeniable.'Further' is like The Chemical Brothers' 'Human After All' or '808s & Heartbreak': misunderstood, but afterwards its influence is undeniable. I must admit, 'Escape Velocity' ruins the whole album; it's a constant anti-climax. However, the rest of the album is as interesting as 'Escape Velocity' isn't. 'Snow' is a song that blows your mind at first listen; and 'Another World', 'Dissolve', 'Horse Power' and 'Swoon' prove that The Chemical Brothers have still as original ideas as they had a decade ago and that EDM can be very emotional and beautiful too. It's stock full of the Brothers' signature mix of playful psychedelia, dreamy hooks and thumping beats - while still retaining their experimental approach to EDM that defined their early works. The 11-minute rave-track 'Escape Velocity' is the only track that, at least for me, feels somewhat uninspired (that's an unpopular opinion though, so take that with a grain of salt!). It will be interesting to see what the future brings for this amazing duo; although I have to admit that judging from their two recent singles 'GO' and 'Sometimes I Feel So Deserted' from their upcoming album, I'm not too pumped for their new material. Oh well, maybe next time! Expand
