Ghostory is as lushly layered as ever, with spectral textures and propulsive dance rhythms, both programmed and played, equally affecting.

Ghostory is at its best a very pleasurable realization of niche.

Without the harmonies and counterpoint of sister Claudia to lend interest and texture, Alajandra is left to rely on the instrumental background for support, and frankly there just isn't much going on to help her out.

Ghostory is supposedly a concept-album song-portrait, but [the album] feels as evanescent as expensive perfume. [Mar 2012, p.98]

Ultimately, it's the combined sound of - there's no getting away from the word - ethereal vocals and cavernous, sometimes even martial dance rock that appeals rather than the detail. [Apr 2012, p.86]

What used to feel like surfing amid the cumulonimbus suddenly feels like snorkling in soup.

Ghostory, rather than resting on the laurels of the band's successful sound up to this point, adds a harder edge to the rhythm and consciously moves on a step.

A very pretty album [but] it's difficult not to see it as a mere specter of School of Seven Bells' potential. [Mar 2012, p.86]

The remaining twosome (Alejandra and guitarist Benjamin Curtis) have actually become more ambitious.

A most wonderful storm of a record indeed.

It's an uninspired ending to what is generally a sharp, full-bodied collection of tracks from what is now an equally sharp, full-bodied duo.

Maybe if we had more records that shot to the moon this high for beauty and romance, we'd have a more beautiful world.

    Fantastically glossy and mystical.

The fantastic Ghostory actually sounds more realized than their previous two full-lengths. [Mar 2012, p.98]

Ghostory is well on par with the strident ephemera to which followers of this project have become accustomed.

    Happily SVllB still sound fantastic.

Dream pop, goth, shoegaze--call it what you want, but what School of Seven Bells have ended up with is a genuinely gorgeous record by any standard.

A stellar first attempt at a concept album... [a] ghoulish delight. [No. 85, p.59]

The album is so cleanly produced that it sounds like they can't afford a flaw. And ironically, it's this seeming aversion to being perceived as imperfect that holds them back.

Trimming back their signature embellishments leaves an album that strangely is more focused sonically, but somehow aimless in intention.

Ghostory's an altogether lush affair with plenty for both fans and newcomers to sift through.

With Ghostory, School of Seven Bells recovers with a newfound voice, still evokes everything they once were as dream pop dealers, but it's still extremely visible that they have more room to grow.

Most of the songs are littered with cosmic debris, but fortunately it's all relegated to the background so as not to interfere with the percolating pace.

    Sounds hollow and uninspired.
  27. At its best on the quasi-techno anthem "Low Times", it's claustrophobically compelling, if too formulaic to be truly super-natural.

    Fun, if a little two-dimensional.

Ghostory is as potent and decadent as School Of Seven Bells have ever been.

Album is a combination of indie rock arrangements with electronic inserts and muffled vocals of Alejandra Dehez - which finally gave such great compositions as "The Night", minimalist "Low Times" or "Scavenger" - where the synth parts leads. The rest of the material does fall behind: energetic "White Wind" or stirring "Reappear" are also notable pieces. Full Review »
