    There are a few missteps (some songs that didn't quite click, a few beats that aren't quite up to par) and this album might not make too many year-end lists. But it's an album made with passion, spirit and a hunger to impress--something that's been missing in much of this corporate rap era.

    Whatever, the point is that instead of snare hits and cymbal crashes Barker's real contribution came from behind the boards--he's got a production credit on every one of the album's tracks. By the same token he's often paired with other producers, and when it works, like on the RZA influenced Carry It, it really works. Unfortunately, when it doesn't work, it really doesn't.

    As a showcase for Barker's production and drumming skills, Give the Drummer Some definitely gets the point across, proving that there's room for more than just Phil Collins and Dave Grohl in the world of drummers successfully going solo.

The numerous different styles from the guest artists can make the album seem a bit choppy for those who are unfamiliar with or dislike some the guests. But, Barker's excellent producing and percussion pulls the record together nicely. It is refreshing to hear the beats and percussion for hip hop tracks almost exclusively produced by a live drum kit, especially one wielded with such clean mastery as Barker showcases.… Collapse
