Much like a Full English and a strong cup of tea, Luke Temple wipes away the hangover from what you might otherwise call pop’s misguided choices (including the bubble perm and Kylie-and-Jason collabs), leaving only the happy memories of dancing to ’80s classics like it’s 1999.

I’m all set to say that Good Mood Fool is my favourite Temple-related record since the HWGM debut.

Temple’s unassuming sound can often hide how experimental he is. Not so on the lysergic electronics of ‘Sue’, which swirl like watercolour dreams.

The whole of Good Mood Fool is pervaded with a sense of apocalyptic dread, yet Temple never wallows.

Temple is very good at indie rock, and his indie folk was always pleasant, but he seems to have found his true niche on Good Mood Fool, and it's his first album to carve out territory that is unique and truly interesting.

You can see how easy it would have been for Luke Temple to be complacent here; he had built up a solid reputation in the indie world and it would have been simple to release a toned-down Here Goes The Magic album. But instead we ended up with this album and I, for one, could not be any happier.

It’s the sound of someone getting the kinks out of the system rather than incorporating old influences seamlessly into a new sound. Still, the final verdict? Very decent.

A few awkward moments aside, Fool is at its best when Temple sounds the least like the Here We Go Magic guy; its buoyant, unfussy front half, out of character though it is, is up there with Temple's best work.

Sure, these glossy throwbacks to eighties synth-pop, soul and funk may not be as innovative as anything on Temple’s previous albums, but he does them incredibly well, and it'd be a fool who doesn't give them a go.

On Good Mood Fool, his voice takes center stage and is wrapped in a myriad of joyful ‘80s pastiche.

Good Mood Fool takes several listens before it’s possible to fully appreciate its full potential.
