What is really so special about Gotham! is its infectiousness.
-
'Gotham!' is an infinitely danceable and certainly insightful record that gets better with each listen, on every frequency.
-
*The* hook-saturated, dance-rock record of 2002.... A near-perfect hybrid of perpetual rhythm, flow and hooks.
-
Q MagazineStruggle, New Disco, and Dance To The Underground are too-self conscious by half but they're still hoisted by a steamrolling dynamic and sharp hooks. [Nov 2002, p.110]
-
My only complaint about this brilliant album is that the first half is so strong, the second half is weak in comparison.
-
It's not a bad album by most standards-- in fact it's pretty good at points-- but in the end slides into a mire of adequacy after generating high expectations early on.
-
Only the dub-inflected excursion of "Pipe Bomb" and the Clash-style raver "Eyes Wide Open" manage to break from boredom and form long enough to feel somewhat genuine -- as long as you don't listen to any of the lyrics.
