Bac to good old times Mr. Cave.Thxs.

Every so often, rock music should be able to scare people. Once in awhile, the music should also be really dirty, full of weird phrases and subversive content (think "White Light/White Heat"). "Grinderman" is exactly that kind of album, and it's effing disgusting. It's the grossest album Nick Cave has put together since the Bad Seeds' "Murder Ballads" in '96. It also happens to be the funniest. While Cave has been honing his admittedly grand auteur status for the last decade, putting out album after album of darkly beautiful semi-classical music (such as the absolutely gut-wrenching "No More Shall We Part"), many old-school Cave fans like myself were left wondering if he'd ever get back to his Birthday Party roots, crafting music to puke to. Grinderman is that record. Listen to "No Pussy Blues" while your kids aren't around. Turn it up to full volume. And when Cave shouts out the title lyric at the end before going into a completely absurd guitar solo of pure Metal Machine Music noise, jump around, run into walls, bash your head on the living room coffee table, take a baseball bat and smash your china cabinet -- do something ridiculous and violent. 'Cause that's the only thing this music is good for. And frankly, that's pretty fucking awesome.… Expand

howling wolf, screaming jay hawkins, the velvet underground, pre-williamson stooges, the cramps (& even a bit of the birthday party) all put through the blender until this bruised and bloody blues is spat out......brilliant!

Awesome! This is the best Nick Cave project in years. Not since "Murder Ballads" has he sounded so much like himself. This record is wonderfully reminiscent of The Birthday Party, but not as chaotic of Cave's seminal group. Is it the best thing Cave has ever done? No. But is it a welcome respite from songs about salvation and Jebus? You bet your bottom. Buy it now.

As close to perfection that 2007 has given us so far (barring Blonde Redhead). Amazing album... I love you Nick Cave

My god, what a lame album. Big bad hombres who begged their wives to let them go play golf, and then once they've got their Bud Lights in their hand they say "We told those bitches!" Nick Cave's lamest moment of all time. "No Pussy Blues"? How about "No Soul Blues."

I am actually an ardent critic of cave's recent output. abattoir blues was partly great, but otherwise his late 90s/ new millennium output has been a letdown to me, so I am pretty amazed by this new project which seems to have completely reinvigorated cave and his gang. The fact that cave has swifted his down-trodden piano antics in favor of a blistering electric guitar is surely the prime cause and a big reason why I salute and celebrate this brave and bold artistic vision - steeped in raw, rudimentary and primal blues.… Expand

This album is just raw. It fires up the need to release some pent of energy, but then I look upon that with a smile. It's almost comedic how Nick Cave gives me a sense of a freestyling cowboy. His lyrics and voice are bolder than any others I can think of. This album is 10 worthy if Grinderman continued to pump out songs like Go Tell The Woman, Set Me Free, Honey Bee, and Love Bomb. Some others feel incomplete and too raw to sink my teeth into.… Expand

Another great album from Nick Cave and his lucky and talented bad seeds. No need to mention the quality of music and lyrics here. However, Grinderman make a serious difference in the sound of music. I mean, we can feel instruments there and people playing together. It sounds like Nick Cave is recording an album just like he is performing on stage. Once again, this a rare and precious thing which makes Grinderman's music so genuine.… Expand

Outstanding debut. Viceral and immediate. Surefire! Oh...and FUCK the naysayers.

Grinderman is amazingly dirty, sexy, and dangerous rock. It has a bit of everything, too: the first two tracks, "Get It On" and "No Pussy Blues" is all tension, distortion, sneering vocals, and nasty attitude. Rave-ups like "Depth Charge Ethel" and the amazing "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars)" chug with purpose. Surprisingly mellow tracks like "Grinderman" and "Electric Alice" are a welcome respite from the dirt and sex. And, the last song, "Love Bomb" recalls the Stooges with its Funhouse beat and bluesy riffing. This definitely isn't for casual music listeners... it's too abrasive and obscure in its references to be immediately accessible. It's not as dark or as confrontational as the Birthday Party, and it doesn't sound much like Cave's work with the Bad Seeds... Grinderman is its own monster, and I really hope Cave and Co. keep it alive.… Expand
