As pleasurable it is to listen to, Hair sounds like it was even more fun to bash out.

Two of the more prolific musicians of our time have come together to put out eight interesting tracks.

[The songs] are peculiarly absorbing, and they only grow more so with repeated listening.

Segall's charms are as abundant as his releases: may his well never run dry. [Jun 2012, p.84]

There's a strong sense of pop hooks all over and with a rock vibe that is both heavily-induced and rendered, Segall and Presley have delivered a terrific debut.

It's not particularly deep, but it's energetic, buoyant, fun and more than a little infectious.

Hair represents the best possible outcome of the collaborative record.

It swirls and it combusts, it annihilates and it soothes; best of all, it's the perfect balance between retro and modern-day sensibilities.

The chemistry is electric, but Hair's most rowdy, rewarding moments occur when Segall and Presley's respective genre sensibilities clash instead of compromise.

With the help of 'Cisco fuzz-pop linchpin Mikael Cronin, they've turned out a collection which displays a fondness for vintage '60s psych and the spooky microdot-pop of Thee Oh Sees.

Prolific songwriter Ty Segall and Californian rock/art collective White Fence are far from shy about their influences on this bold, brief (30-minute) outing.

Their unholy powers combined, they give us Hair, a raucous, psychedelic guitar skirmish that transcends descriptions of its creators' individual works.

[A] feisty, psych-tinged hook up with Tim "White Fence" Presley. [May 2012, p.80]

Hair is more of a juicy stew than a straight-up throwback record.

What's it sound like? A lot like Segall's proper solo material, frankly.

What is required to create a record which is grown from the compost of the past and still remain original is something close; perhaps not quite; not entirely; but nearly, genius.

[A] fine and adventurous release, which finds depth and nuance in the often tryingly two-dimensional world of garage revivalism.

On Hair Segall and Presley manage to occupy the spaces left vacant by each other, leaving listeners to wonder, with every continuous spin, where one of them ends and the other begins.

Hair works because even when the pieces aren't well integrated, they are often enjoyable listening.

It's fun while it lasts, but it's easily forgotten once over.

Ty Segall and White Fence haven't reinvented themselves, nor have they revolutionised garage rock, but Hair stands as a welcome reminder of how enjoyable guitar and drum music can be both to play and to hear.

It's not ground breaking, but its commitment to creating an authentically deranged vibe could see your fringe grow an inch with every song. [Jun 2012, p.109]

Starting from the lethargic "Time" somewhat reminiscent of Elliot Smith's achievements, through a truly exuberant "I Am Not A Game" supported by lots of synthesizers thanks to whom song seems to refer to the '60s and '70s and finally the kind of lo-fi "Scissor People". It should be mentioned that almost all ofthe songs are performed in the same style where instrumental parts and solos were taken really seriously - which may resemble the band Thee Oh Sees. I listened to Ty Segall's album "Goodbye Bread" last year and thought that it was great. This year, he has come out with more songs that have a very similar feel to them as "Goodbye Bread". Overall, it showcases nice guitar riffs and catchy beats. Well done Ty. Full Review »
