Basically, it's earnest, well-crafted indie with synths. [May 2005, p.86]
  2. Because the songs refuse to make their musical strictures ends unto themselves, because a good sense of melody can make a bunch of analog synthesizers feel as familiar as your mom’s meatloaf, because Bazan’s lyrics celebrate the commonplace so convincingly, the Headphones manage to sound as real -- in fact, as ordinary -- as any ol’ rock band.
  3. Magnet

Bazan's ability to write compelling, catchy tunes remains intact. [#68, p.100]
  4. After the bland misfire that was last year's Achilles Heel, Headphones' debut offers some hope for lapsed Pedro-philes.
  5. Forget the easy Gibbard/Tamborello comparisons and look here if you seek more mope with your Moog.
  6. Headphones would have made a killer EP.
  7. Under The Radar

Headphones is a welcome experiment for a songwriter who was getting dangerously close to repeating himself. [#9]

Not bad, but I've seen better from Bazan. An interesting new twist from the traditional roots.
