Heza still contains several terrific examples of hooky guitar pop. [Jun 2013, p.73]

Generationals are far from the only band making chirpy, world-influenced indie-pop at the moment--but it has so much genuine charm, so expertly executed, that it’s impossible not to fall for.

It’s markedly less garage-born than previous endeavors, too, sounding more akin to a dancier Echo & The Bunnymen or a version of The Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs recorded at higher fidelity.

To call Heza, the third LP from the New Orleans-based duo, more opaque would be an understatement.

With this collection of simple, endlessly enjoyable indie pop, Heza and Generationals make the statement against giving up and remaining stagnant.

Ultimately, Heza is a nuanced work that flirts with the experimental, but always remains intimate, atmospheric, and endlessly listenable.

While their formerly peppy mode could be exhausting, it's difficult not to yearn for a bit more razzle-dazzle on Heza.

This album is nothing short of amazing. It is a giant leap forward for the Generationals in a stylistic manor. Just something about this albumThis album is nothing short of amazing. It is a giant leap forward for the Generationals in a stylistic manor. Just something about this album just hit me in a good spot and I just fell in love with it, especially the songs closing (Durga II), which is one of the best Generationals songs that they have put out. This album is just filled with great songs that you can listen to over and over. Definitely their best album. I highly recommend it. Expand

I ran across the newest offering from Generationals in a rather circuitous manner, not having heard any of their previous releases. (I foundI ran across the newest offering from Generationals in a rather circuitous manner, not having heard any of their previous releases. (I found this album while browsing the label's website after purchasing another album.) Having not heard their previous work, I had the luxury of having no preconceptions and no expectations as to the stylistic content.
My review is simple, and will avoid needless analogy. If you like listening to tracks that don't necessarily remind you of any other artist or song (maybe not even any other of their own work) then the combination of stylistic approaches on this album will likely appeal.
You will find connection with some poignant lyrics, and be intrigued by interesting backgrounds if you listen intently, and be soothed and unhindered if you need background music during those "lonely" solo times at work, filing, sorting, cleaning, planning. Even my 13 year old is a fan.
