Hurley - Weezer
Hurley Image
  • Summary: As its first independently released album, Weezer still remains true to form with a collection of Pinkerton-esque pop rock.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 15 out of 28
  2. Negative: 1 out of 28
  1. Hurley wrestles with serious themes - heartbreak, nostalgia, busted and unrealized dreams; the kinds of things that songwriters usually write songs about when they're on the precipice of turning 40.
  2. Dec 13, 2010

The "sonically exploratory" nature of Hurley occasionally serves Weezer's boredom threshold better than it does the songs. [Nov 2010, p.103]
  3. If there is a compliment to be paid to Hurley, it is that the band refrains from delving into the sort of WTF territory they've explored of late.

  1. For all those Weezer fans hoping to here a shift in the band’s direction, here you go. Though, I must warn you, not the entire album is a refreshing step in the “right direction”. I bring attention to the direction of the band in respects that their music is an expression and perhaps the direction they have been taking for the past ten years is the one they want, and their music is the message they have to express as they get older. However, Hurley does offer some tracks that will take its listeners back to wake of The Blue Album and Pinkerton. With songs such as “Unspoken”, “Run Away”, and “Hang On”, Rivers and The Gang whisk fans back to the passionate confessions of Pinkerton. While “Memories”, the album’s single, tells the story of how the band feels about the past and reminisces on the good ol’ days. This anthem-of-sorts will have you wanting to pump their fist to the instrumental power and exploration the band has favored in recent albums. Other songs on the album you’ll just have to pretend Weezer didn’t record. The track “Smart Girls” is somewhat embarrassing to listen to, and makes you ask “are these guys serious?” I recommend buying the deluxe version of all Weezer albums, which proves good practice in this case, because Hurley’s bonus tracks, including “All My Friends are Insects” and “I Want to Be Something” are both pretty sweet. “All My Friends are Bugs” is a fun and goofy jam that I can only image was written for the band member’s children to rock out to, but even with its juvenile content, Weezer proves they can make anything cool. “I Want to Be Something” is another Pinkerton-esque song that moves you with its sad and thoughtful lyrics delivered by Cuomo’s powerful vocals. Another treat in the bonus material is a cover of “Viva la Vida”, which is actually a nice track that is done well. Also, if you pre-order the album you received the webisode, which makes me think that perhaps the band took advice from the Beatles and dropped acid for inspiration. There’s not much to say about the webisode other than you’ll be waiting to see if something meaningful happens at the end. In all, Hurley is a album Weezer fans will want in their collection, and perhaps marks Weezer’s triumphant return to the emotion power-pop we all know and love. Expand

  2. Easily their best since "Maladroit". Haven't been able to take it out of the CD player. The songs are very fleshed out, sonically layered, and Rivers has matured as a vocalist. Expand

  3. Shocked to see the user rating this high. The album is truly not good. Track 10 is the exception. And I'm not giving any benefit just because this album is better than, 'Raditude,' because a blind rat could squeak an album better than that. The songs are worthy enough, at least for Good Charlotte, just not Weezer. Expand
